OT: Alumni
Thanks to Jimbobtressel for a good post about kids currently on campus. I'm class of '09 MechEng graduating in the spring, but something West Texas Blue said got me thinking. What were the good places to hang out back in the day? I know Charlie's has changed since I've been here and Mitch's re-opened. As for places that are no longer here, I know Skeeps used to be Dooley's and Mr Floods Party is long gone, and apparently there used to be a Taco Bell on State St, but what else is gone? I think it is cool to hear about old hang out places in Ann Arbor and where they were. Time to tap into the resources of the older dudes. Thanks.

There was a good old place called Steve and Barry's when I was there.....that was the day. Everything in the store for under $20. Under $20! Even a Michigan letter jacket with pleather sleeves. RIP S&Bs

I've been to S&B's in AA, as well as West Lafayette, and naturally it was all about cheap college gear.
But there was a Steve & Barry's here in PA by my parents' house, which was crazy because it was nowhere near Penn State and they didn't even sell much Nits gear... instead the place focused more on the crappy t-shirts with cereal logos and low-grade clothes for the white trash type.
Funny thing is, it didn't perform and they closed it just after Christmas... and they were selling the stuff out at $1 PER SHOPPING CART. Per CART! So obviously there's a load of kids in Pennsylvania wearing plastic leather jackets this winter...

i'm not that much older but when i was there mitch's was across the street from where it is now and had dollar pitchers on mon and wed. eminem made an appearance at touchdowns (which is now called something else) pizza house was half the size that it is now and was always open late for chipates (sp?) and charlies was twice as large as it is now. ricks was always jamming "living on a prayer" on friday nights. scorekeepers was usually packed and ashley's was for the grad students. and in the spring dominicks for sure. those bars were fun and all but looking back the house parties were some of the best times.

TouchDudes has turned into the Blue Leprechaun and it is VERY different from what it used to be. It is like the jug, only bigger and a little more upscale. Mitch's has 2 dollar pitchers now. Rick's is big on Thursdays. Ashley's and Dominick's are still the same. Scorekeepers is still packed with underage women. Charlie's is still more or less the same, but the upstairs is the BTB Cantina. Just btb with alcohol available.

Current student here. The Taco Bell has been reinstated at the Michigan League, though the prices are slightly inflated.

Sucks about Steve and Barry's, but the M-Den is probably the best replacement as long as it doesn't take away from Moe's, which is a great sports shop. I can't figure out where Mitch's used to be, so if you could help me out, I'd like to know. Touchdown's is now called the Blue Leprechaun, a much more laid back atmosphere than Touchdown's but still draws quite the crowd, which is an upgrade for South U in my opinion. Pizza House (twice as big), Charlie's (twice as small), Rick's, Skeeps, Ashley's, and Dominick's seem like they are still the same of old. As for new places, Quickee Burger is awesome and will most likely grow in popularity now that they have a liquor license, and the Fifth Quarter seems to be establishing a good place to dance your ass off other than Rick's and Skeep's.

Quickie burger is terrible. Overpriced and they use the cheapest ingredients I've had on a burger. Got one once, it had this cheap whole-wheat bun that fell apart in my hands... like it crumbled into crumbs as I held it. They probably get Sam's Club buns and meat. Ended up eating it with a fork. Fries were good... they had fries with sausage gravy. But you get like 2 oz of 'em for $3. I can make better myself. Quickie burger... better off dead. or Tubby's.
Charlie's is smaller, yes, but improved. The TVs are watchable now (35" or so HD widescreens ... as opposed to the 18" tube TVs old as my parents). They are renovating the area next door... should be done in a few years (when the economy rebounds, inshallah). And it is smoke free, for those of you who like that sort of thing.
5th quarter has a mechanical bull which is nice, but seems to be straddling the fence between a Main St. martini joint and a Rick's-type dumpster diving extravaganza. I liked Oz better. No more places in town to get a hookah and a glass of gin anymore
We have a Bar Louie now. Beer selection is upper-grade but the atmosphere is generic. Nice place to meet females after the better joints empty out, though. Food is pretty good.
Heidelberg used to have $2 bottles of Arcadia ales. An excellent deal. Now upped to $2.50. Slightly annoying, still good
At Goodnight Gracie's Wednesdays and Thursdays feature Laith Al-Saadi, a local blues guitarist. He is excellent. The music is free, the drinks are good. They no longer peddle cigars, which is unfortunate, so bring your own smokes
Firefly Club moved from downtown to right by the Polish grocery store around Mosley and Main

I have gotten this response about Quickee Burger a few times, but for some reason I love the place. I must admit I have only been in there a couple times when I wasn't inebriated, but the guys who work behind the counter are usually hilarious. To each his own. Thanks much on the tip about Goodnight Gracie's, trying to spearhead a trek out there to check out the place and Laith. Usually if we don't go to Charlie's it's because there is a line or we are in the dead period from 6 - 10 when pitchers are still expensive as everywhere else. I'm looking forward to checking this out though, thanks again. What was Oz?

Since we're on AA bars I have to give love to Friday night Wings fest at the Heidelberg, especially the day before a home game.
