Ohio State loses 4-star OG Doug Nester on Signing Day

Submitted by Laser Wolf on February 6th, 2019 at 8:52 AM

4-star WV OG Doug Nester (6th rated guard in the country) flipped and signed to Virginia Tech this morning. Was committed since August 2017 but started looking around after Urban’s retirement and Day wasn’t able to hold on.

Their class is currently 17th on 247. Assuming they don't move up dramatically, this would be the lowest ranked class for them since 2010 (Tressel's final class). The next lowest class in that timespan was ranked 7th, in 2015.

That's right. Lined up by rank, our best x players exceed their best x, and then we have 10ish free agents as a bonus. So even if zero of those 3-stars are hits (and with this coaching staff, that's unlikely), ours is the better class both in raw score and talent density of the top x.

* (where x = OSU's final class size, somewhere in the range of 15-17)

FWIW, the same is true versus each Big Ten team, which is probably obvious, though PSU and their class of 23 keeps it competitive.

I can see your point.  If you were to ask an OSU fan they would tell you they believe if they had the room their next 10 guys would be better than UM's next 10 because their average is higher than UM's.  I think this is delusion, but they are OSU fans after all.

I’m struggling with the concept of “bonus” recruits. There are a finite number of scholarships distributed among 4-5 recruiting classes. Is the idea that the “bonus” recruits that don’t pan out will leave the team one way or another  in the next couple of years and be replaced with new “bonus” recruits? It seems OSU has a smaller class size this cycle because they aren’t losing a ton of guys to the nfl, graduation, or otherwise.

I think Ohio State will be fine because they have been for over two decades, but I am glad to see that they took a little hit when it comes to recruiting.  I realize they had a small class and are still bringing in some top talent, but their class would have been ranked higher if Urban Meyer was still their coach.  We need to put it to them this year so an inkling of doubt begins to creep into peoples minds about Day.  A coach saying "Hi Bobby, this is Urban Meyer" rings a bit louder than a coach saying "Hi Bobby, this is Ryan Day."

Time will tell I guess. Go Blue!

That's an interesting take.  I think it all depends on Harrison. Did Harrison chose OSU based on the game performance or because Urban left?  It was well publicized that UM getting blown out left some doubts in his mind as was the fact he didn't like Meyer.  If they retained Harrison in this class then yes, I'd agree.  If retaining Meyer meant Harrison signed with UM, then I'd disagree.  I think this is impossible to know yet.  They are also off to a hot start in 2020.  It will take a few years and some on field results to see how the Meyer retirement really effects recruiting.  But, yeah, any year UM outranks OSU in recruiting is a good thing.

Call me crazy, but I've been communicating to a few folks on 11W and it boggles my mind that somehow they believe that OSU's class is better than UM's because the average is better and they think UM just signs a bunch of 3-stars after their top 15.  They are delusional.  I will say they are off to hot start for 2020 and UM is not so much, but UM clearly has the advantage for 2019.

You're not crazy, they'll always be like that.

I believe part of the problem is Michigan does not seem to sign players who can make a strong instant impact--our freshmen are not as ready to go as OSU. That probably requires research, but I believe that to be true.

This, when our guys do start as Sophs or later, their guys are veterans who have game experience, and well, they're usually better anyway.

There's no substitute for game experience as we have found out with so many recruits that do not seemed to have reached their potential.

Wouldn't shed to many tears for them as they have a very small recruiting class which means a ton of talent returning including their 2017 & 2018 monster classes which were the two highest-ranked back to back classes in 247 Composite history. Their current average of 92.28/recruit ranks only behind Alabama & Georgia.

Then add in the transfer of Justin Fields and that they may get one of the graduate transfers OL of either all-ACC Parker Braun or Jonah Jackson......well, something tells me they might be competitive on the field this year. Just a guess.

Wolve1972... Just took a peek at your posting history. It quite literally looks like every post of yours has something to do with OSU. I see you sprinkle in usage of "Suckeyes" here and there to give yourself cover but it's pretty obvious you are an OSU fan. I just want to let you know it's okay to come out of the closet and post as your true self. Really, it is.

I live 30 miles north of Columbus (Delaware) and get to experience all of the OSU garbage 1st hand. I'm very familiar with the day to day happenings around the OSU football program as it gobbles up the headlines around here. My time mixing with the natives since Nov. 24th has been exceptionally painful. I bought into all of the BS / UM hype and assured everyone of a Wolverine victory (an understatement).  My point with my previous post is kind of related to the negative OSU hype/positive UM hype that I seem to buy into year after year and then run with it. No, I'm the farthest thing from an OSU fan but I know one thing for sure - I'm keeping my mouth shut around here until we win again.

Kid named Baldwin, last minute pickup last year.  Had 2 torn ACLs, so didn't get much real practice last year.  It is not impossible that he would actually be good enough for them to win the Big10 with him, but hard to see them doing more than that; more likely they'd lose at least two Big10 games with him.

After that, it's nothing.  Nada.  Zip.  A grad transfer brought in from West Virginia whe was never, ever supposed to see the field, not even in mop up duty.  Then a walk-on.

Even if Fields is eligible, depth at QB could easily ruin their season.  If he's ineligible, they are one injury way from a truly disasterous season-- like, 5-6 loss bad.

Even if Fields is elegible, the lack of depth at QB may haunt them this year.  Fields can run the ball and running QB’s have a higher injury rate.  With one unproven backup with bad knees (Baldwin), I would expect to see the same lack of QB run plays with Fields as they had with Haskins.   Take away the QB run threat and the offense gets much easier to defend.

They're basically fucked, until the last weekend in November, where this, injuries, the laws of physics, karma, justice, and my faith in humanity suddenly won't matter anymore, for the 18th time in 19 years...

He was the #6 rated OG; they wound up signing the #7 rated OG guard instead.  Significantly though, the kid they did sign is currently planning on a two-year Mormon mission after his Freshman year, so it wouldn't be shocking if he changed his mind about where he wanted to play during his mission and never wound up contributing.

OSU's OL recruiting has been nothing short of disasterous the last two years; some highly ranked guys, but way too few.  It's not likely to matter this year, but the following two seasons could be very rough for them.  At a minimum, if they don't clean up with at least 5 good OL in the 2020 class, their OL coach will be shown the door.

As mentioned in my previous post, I live in Central Ohio and you're dead-on about their OL coach Studrawa.  The natives are restless and as you said he could be shown the door after the 2019 season. He considered as a lazy recruiter. He has pressure to not only have his unit perform on the field this year but to bring in a solid recruiting class. He's also the last of Urban's "buddies" that hasn't been shown the door yet. Schiano, Bill Davis (Urban's best man), and a-hole Zach Smith are all gone. My money is on Studrawa being shown the door after 2019;
