NBC Olympics President U of M grad
OT: didn't see it among the noted ties between the Olympics and the University of Michigan (I apologize if I missed it). Anyways, the guy running the whole shebang for NBC is Gary Zenkel--Michigan alum-letterman(golf)-big time family donor.

That was actually an interesting Q & A with Zenkel. Thanks for sharing it!
Actually, let us also give credit to the nine other folks listed at the bottom of this page who are also Michigan graduates and have substantial roles in making various aspects of Olympic coverage happen for NBC. Very impressive indeed.

respect and whatnot, but this is of much greater interest to me than the topic of this thread. where's he from?

He's from Texas. Its going to be really hard to pull him from the state of Texas. His brother is currently a student at A&M. He's visiting there this weekend, and also has interest in Texas Tech. And I'm sure Baylor and Texas will be after him hard too.
Its nice to make the top ten, but this is a real long shot.

homesickness issues? Even before coaching change issues?
[memory post open to factual rebuttal]

Mallett was more of a mutual parting of ways than a homesickness issue. Michigan was going to a spread system under Rich Rod and as a tall statue QB, he didn't fit in that offense.
McGuffie (if I remember right) was more medical related than anything. He had a ton of concussion problems at Michigan, and I think that played a role in his transfer as well.

Or is that a 2013 question?

and couldn't help wondering if that's why the Shibutani sibs got so much facetime in the opening ceremonies (without identifying them by name, lest the Mich staff be accused of bias).
But maybe it was just that they're so cute.
