Michigan Wrestling finishes 5th at NCAAs

In his first year as Michigan Head Wrestling Coach, Sean Bormet did pretty well considering what the team lost last year. Replacing 2 solid All-Americans and highly ranked seniors with freshmen will drop you a few places in the national standings. With 3 All-Americans all finishing 3rd and 2 more falling just short of A.A. status this was a solid season. Michigan loses a 3 time All-American in Alec Pantaleo and a multi-year starter in Malik Amine. With Will Lewan already in the program and beating Pantaleo twice this season, I feel 157 is in good hands going forward. 149 however looks to be more of the same unless this team adds a transfer over the summer. A team trophy is within reach again in 2019-2020 but we will need much much more from 149, 184, and 197. With an Olympics on the horizon 2019-2020 may be a unique year, it will be interesting to see who throws their name in for an Olympic Redshirt.

I’d like to see Mason Paris gain 30 pounds of muscle in the offseason.  He was too light to his season.    It’ll be Massa’s last chance  to be a National Champ, but he’ll have to go through that stud at Virginia Tech who just dismantled Joseph from Penn St.    It’s all about recruiting.  We need ELITE high schoolers.  Somehow you have to get the guys that Penn St and OSU gets.  The program is solidly top 10, but they need to make that jump to get to #1.

Ohio State loses Micah Jordan, Joey McKenna, and Myles Martin. Returning Kollin Moore along with great recruiting they are still a top 5 team. Penn State loses Nolf, Nickal, Rasheed, and potentially Cassar, but returning Joseph, Hall and Lee along with Cael and recruiting still makes them the team to beat. BUT...Michigan returns every key starter not named Pantaleo (but do return a RS FR that beat Pantaleo twice). Michigan is better suited to beat both teams in 2019-2020 than they were this year. To your point the 2020 class will be a major key to future success, as we will need to replace Myles Amine, Logan Massa, and Stevan Micic.

It’s no to just Carl, it’s Cael in PA.  PA produces the most wrestling talent and it is not even close.  The combination of him at the main school in the most wrestling heavy state is deadly.  Cael had nowhere near this level of success at Iowa State, it’s not just him.

2019 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament - The 50-Year Curse for Several Traditional Powers

As disappointing a season as the 2018-19 season was for the Michigan Wolverines men’s ice hockey team, consider this:

It appears that this will be the first time since 1969, and only the second time ever, that the NCAA men's hockey tournament will have no Michigan, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Boston University, Boston College or Maine in the field.  In 1969, Denver, Harvard, Cornell and Michigan Tech were the only four teams in the tournament.  LINK to NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament History

Three of the four participants in the 1969 tournament (Denver, Harvard and Cornell) are projected to be in this year's tournament. LINK to Projected Field for 2019 Tournament

Great matches last night. A few highlights:

1) Daton Fix probably wishes he had short hair. Looked like Suriano grabbed the head gear in OT but Fix's long hair obscured Suriano's fingers enough to make it inconclusive.

2) Yianni is amazing. Has the look of a four timer.

3) Was really pulling for Mehki Lewis and was happy to see him get the W and take down PSU guy in the process.

4) Valencia/Hall with another entertaining match. Valencia's ability to ride out the second after the takedown was the difference. Also, Valencia looks huge for 174.
