Michigan Spots in New Haven County?

Submitted by NYWolverine on September 15th, 2023 at 2:22 PM

I’ve been living in New Haven County for several years now, but I still haven’t heard of or found any good bars where I can count on a solid turnout of Blue for a Michigan game day…

Any fans/alums in the area? Do you know of (or would like to commandeer) any good places?

I’ll start by suggesting Orange Ale House…

I don’t know much about Connecticut but oddly enough I was talking to one of our sales guys (covers Maine down to NY) the other day about awesome sports bars and he said Trinity is his favorite in New Haven.

No idea if it has M fans there.

glad I could be of no use.

While it is not in New Haven county, the U-M Club of Fairfield County will host a football game watch party at The Blind Rhino - South Norwalk (15 N Main St, Norwalk) for you to gather and cheer on our Michigan Wolverines.  This event is free and open to all alums, friends and fans.

Our dedicated area is the stage - that is our viewing area. Seating is first-come, first-served.

I realize it is about a 40-minute drive (or a 50-minute train ride), but it is the closest Michigan watch party that I know of.

The only ones that show up on the official alumni club site are in Norwalk and West Hartford. Either location would be about a 40-60 minute drive, depending on where you are.

As an aside, I've been traveling to New Haven (the city) recently for work. Interesting town. Have tried Frank Pepe's and Sally's and Pepe's is definitely better (imo). Haven't tried Modern yet - maybe next time I'm out there.

Not a bad place to go for work if you like pizza!

Last year my wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I said “a trip to New Haven”.

Bless her heart, she made it happen. We went to Sally’s, Pepe’s, Modern, and Zuppardi’s over two days.  It was amazing.

New Haven also has Loui’s Lunch, which is billed as the birthplace of the hamburger. Haven’t tried that.  Maybe next time.

Next time you’re in town hit Louie’s for a classic burger. They’re pressed with onions and oven roasted on (what I think are) original metal spits. Served patty melt style.

Across the street is “Bar”, a microbrew and pizzeria where I went on my second date with the wife. Now, this may be more of a locals thing than a true pizza recommendation, but the New Haven community LOVES Bar’s mashed potatoes and bacon pizza.

Go figure, it’s grown on me. Worth a try.

Modern is my fave New Haven pizza and most accessible. Frank Pepe for the clam casino pie. Sally’s red pie is a classic. Zuppardi’s bacon and tomato pie is fantastic for a stop to West Haven. Then go to the Baymont Plaza (on Woodmont/West Haven border) and stop by Dive Bar for a beer and some apps, or Riptide for a lobster roll!

Not so fast. Outside for Mory's, there's really no where one could go and root for Yale except the games themselves. Then again, one of the pleasures of the Yale/New Haven sports environment is the accessibility of live D-1 sports.  (Minus football.  There is little pleasure to be had in watching Ivy League football).
