Michigan Softball wins big against #6 ASU 1-0, Now 26-1

The Michigan Softball team won a huge game today against #7 Arizona State 1-0.  Jordan Taylor took a perfect game into the 5th inning.  She ended the game with 2 hits (1 double) and 1 walk with 8 strikeouts.

My pre-season All-American Ashley Lane was the offensive hero with a bases empty home run in the bottom of the sixth.  The Wolverines had something going in the 5th with bases loaded but they could not score.

This win should answer the critics who claim that Michigan's wins were against "baby seals".  This is certainly a confidence booster.  M left the bases loaded in the 5th inning and could not score.

We are playing in the Judi Garman Classic this weekend.  There are several top 10 teams playing, including Arizona, Washington and Oklahoma.  Notre Dame beat Oklahoma in a suprise 2-1 victory.  So ND might have something this year.  There is a rumor that Arizona did not make the trip.  More to come.  Great job ladies.

Edit: Ashley's tater ties her for the team lead with Dorian Shaw at 10 each.  It gives her 34 'hit-em-ins", while Dorian has 30.  Colie Sappingfield and Bree Evans lead the team with 35 hits each.

This is a good question.  The key here is to watch for the higher ranked teams.  There is a chance that we would jump up 1 spot.

Here are the latest (as of 17MAR11) rankings in the coaches poll:

1) Georgia, 2) Florida, 3) Alabama, 4) Washington and 5) Michigan.  Washington is playing in this tourney, although we will not play them.  We could swap with them, if Washington plays a little rocky.

These rankings really dont have much of an impact on the playoffs much.  We would need to win the Big Ten in order to host the regionals.  Rankings at this point is for bragging rights.
