Michigan Rowing wins B1G Championship, ends Ohio State’s reign

It’s been a long time coming but Michigan is once again back on top of the B1G in Rowing.

OSU had won the B1G each of the last 6 seasons but this year Michigan put that brand new indoor rowing facility into action.

The #5 Wolverines got the better of OSU twice during the regular season and it was a 3rd time charm today in Baraboo, Wisconsin at Devil’s Lake.

Michigan got out to a nice lead in the standings when the top boat—the First Varsity Eight—won their race with a time of 6:22.012. The first B1G Championship for the boat since 2012.

Michigan’s Second Varsity Eight came up big and won their race to capture another individual boat title. The 2V8 finished with a time 6:30.479. Next closest finisher was Ohio State at 6:35.078 so it was a comfortable win.

HUGE points.

But that’s not all. Michigan’s 2nd Varsity Four won their race at 7:30.616. Our 1V4 took silver behind OSU, finishing 7:19.003 to their 7:17.351.

Michigan’s 3rd Varsity 4 was narrowly edged out for the title by OSU, 7:27.837 to 7:28.133

Another Michigan boat managed to win another individual crown: the First Novice Eight. The Wolverines rolled the competition with a time of 6:37.253. Ohio State came in 2nd at 6:40.667

All of that added up to 186 team points: the second most ever scored at the B1G Championships.

Michigan is the 2019 B1G Champion, edging out #6 Ohio State 186-171 in the Final standings. It’s the 6th Championship in the program’s history and the first since 2012.

#5 Michigan receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on May 31 with this conference title.

Final standings-

  1. #5 Michigan- 186
  2. #6 Ohio State- 171
  3. #11 Wisconsin- 109
  4. #14 Rutgers- 107
  5. #15 Indiana- 98
  6. #12 Iowa- 78
  7. Michigan State- 67
  8. Minnesota- 46

Fantastic job by this team and coaching staff. It really has been a climb back to the top but they did it. And it wasn’t like OSU took a dip. We BEAT them at their best, multiple times.

About god dang time. I had grow tired of watching OSU win the Big Ten.

Rutgers went from the saving grace of programs like MSU (who at one point had V8s win 3 or 4 Big Ten Titles in a row) to beating them, which is hilarious. Rutgers basically gave everyone else a program to beat at Big Tens every year and now half of the conference is below them.

First Varsity Eight - with a name like that I half expected to see them holding a sterling silver cup in black and white photos. Congrats to the Maize and Blue.

Thanks for the recap.
