Michigan makes (and spends) A LOT of $ on athletics

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

These numbers are from 2014 so I would expect them to be quite a bit higher for 2015 and 2016.  We had the 3rd highest expenses, behind only Texas and OSU.

MSU lagging behind at #17 as expected.

They don't really bank tons of money, it's not meant to be for profit. IIRC, we were projected to actually cross over into the red recently for the first time in a long time due to Brandon's enormous buyout, in addition to whatever we were paying Hoke still, but Toys 'R Us bailed us out and we managed a small gain.

Cash flows are better indicator of financial health than accounting profits.

Plus the Athletic Department shouldn't be hoarding cash, they should be spending it on improving the student athletes experience through facility upgrades, academic support, better coaching, better equipment, etc.

Does anyone know what constitutes the $263,000-ish subsidy on Michigan's line? I was curious as to where that came from even though it is a pretty small number (less than 1%) in comparison to the total spend.

Also, Rutgers and Maryland....I knew the % subsidy would be significant, but nearly 34% for Rutgers? Wow.

With it being so low, I would guess it's some sort of knit pick thing where the university pays for some sort of costs the athletic department has for events hosted at athletic facilities... it could be someone's salary that crosses different department categories...some sort of academic program for the athletic center? It's totally based on how the school chooses to manage it's book keeping, which also makes it difficult to compare these numbers from school to school. I am certain these are *not* dollars coming from students pockets through fees, which is an enormous issue at Rutgers and a constant black eye for them in local NJ politics.

It's the salary and benefits for an athletic department official (I want to say Academic Compliance, but can't recall for sure) that is paid by the university in order to comply with NCAA regulations but avoid a conflict of interest.  That person's salary counts as a subsidy to the department.

They should be doing this.  Freaking Purdue barely spends a dime more than they absolutely have to but collect a lot of the same revenue sharing other schools do.  I'm glad UM is actually trying to take the financial advantages they have and maximize them.

I figured most of the SEC would out-spend them plus a few other powers in the other leagues. I would've expected them in the low 20's.

Also, I wanna know where in the world A&M is getting all that money. Is being the 2nd most popular team in Texas really that valuable?
