Michigan is the best university in the B1G & #24 globally per survey
"The University of Michigan is one of the world’s 25 best universities and the best school in the Big Ten, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The survey ranked UM No. 24 and 17th in the U.S.
The survey ranked schools by “several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices and the per capita academic performance of an institution"".

is the ranking that named us the greatest public university in the US. This ranking has us well behind Berkeley, so it must be defective. Here is a link to the story that discusses our number 1 ranking:

It has UNC and UVA as 2 and 3. Another recent survey had us number 1 and UNC, UVA, Berkeley and William & Mary rounding out the top five.

Michigan was No. 22 worldwide not No. 24.
Sparty was No. 99.

University rankings are only useful to someone who is interested in looking beyong the rankings. (Does it make sense?) There are so many factors to consider when choosing a school. The decision made will probably impact the whole life or at least set the future direction.
What's the ranking for the degree I am interested in?
How good is that graduate program?
Within that graduate program, how good is the "field" I will be majoring in?
How demanding and useful of the curriculum is?
How much is the cost to attain the degree? (Justifiable?)
How safe is the campus?
Do you care about the sporting atmosphere?
......
Considering all the factors I care about (academically in MSEE and sports-wise), Michigan is really #1 in my book, with Stanford and Berkeley at #2 and #3.
