Miami (YTM) hires Ed Reed as "Chief of Staff" to Manny Diaz

I didn't know this was a thing. I'm sure his duties begin and end with 'show up with your Super Bowl ring on while we're hosting recruits'. Of course, if there's any school who would have a Doug Stamper on staff, it would be Miami.

I get that Ed Reed is a good resource to have around your football team.  But Chief of Staff?  I mean, a CoS manages an executive's staff because the executive is too busy with other things to deal with the day to day management of direct reports (for the most part).  I'm having trouble understanding why Diaz would be too busy to deal with how the OC is organizing offensive workouts, or whatever.  Unless, you know, Manny just isn't up to the task, or doesn't believe his assistants are capable of working well enough on their own to not require constant micro-management.

I have no doubt I've simplified things - coaches get fired for lack of positive results all the time.  Perhaps its sometimes (mostly, always?) related to not managing the staff and overall program well enough?  Probably...  Most coaches are control freaks (Rich Rod), some are better people than others despite that (Brady Hoke).

Actually, I'm talking myself into supporting this!  If Diaz feels, for whatever reason, that he just can't keep up with everything well enough to maintain a top program, this is a great idea.  If nothing else, it gets Ed Reed back into football, and how bad can that be, right?

I don’t think this is a traditional CoS role because I don’t see 1) that necessarily being the need here (vs hype/recruiting), 2) Ed Reed wanting to do that.

Reed is a brilliant guy who can probably do just about anything but he’s also a millionaire immortalized as being a free spirit. Will be interesting to see what he does but it has to be good just to have a guy like that around your program.

One of the local complaints about the "U" and why they are not dominant these days is the new kids don't respect/are aware of what the players a generation ago did there... that they put the "U" on the map.

I'm not saying this is what I think, or rational people think... but this is what a lot of people around Miami pining for the good 'ol days think.

This move makes sense from that perspective.  That Ed is going to be that ambassador to the past.

Last ditch effort for Diaz to save his job. He’s on his way out sooner then later. W Christibol tearing it up at Oregon it just makes them look even worse.

If Miami can have a Chief of Staff to help with recruiting, Harbaugh should hire a whole Cabinet to help with recruiting.

Secretary of Defense: Charles Woodson

Secretary of Education: Tom Brady

Secretary of the Interior: Steve Hutchinson

Secretary of State: Tyrone Wheatley

Secretary of Labor: Pick a Glasgow or Jordan Kovacs

Please don't post links to "INSIDE THE U" anymore, I need to make sure my computer wears protection... afraid it will catch a disease.
