Men's Rowing retains Wolverbuck Oar

Submitted by Aamoldini on

How to start Ohio State Week right:

Michigan Men's Rowing, after an hour long fog delay this morning, claimed the

Wolverbuck Oar for a record-breaking 15th consecutive year by defeating the OSU men's crew

club. The streak stands as the longest winning streak by a Michigan team over an OSU team.

The oar will reclaim its rightful place in the IM building as the team heads indoors for winter

training. May the winning tradition continue this weekend:

I don't have time specific results just yet (coaches haven't released them just yet)

but frosh ran 3 boats in each of 2 flights and top frosh boat beat

OSU's two boats in each of those flights. This years frosh class looks to be one

of the best since the 2001 class that won IRA silver.

As a former AARC rower, it is clear to me that, at least as far as men's rowing goes, OSU sucketh.

They pretty much always have sucked, they still suck, and may they suck forever more.

Now maybe they can get some of that suckiness to rub off in the horseshoe.

disagree. I was on the purdue crew team and I seem to remember kicking Michigan's ass all four years I was there, especially at Dad Vail's and the Head of the Elk. Michigan is one of the top but they are not UConn women's bball level of dominance.

2001-2005. IRA's during that time period pretty much came down to Purdue and Michigan. but thanks for ignoring basic facts like race results in your Michigan arrogance (which I have too...) It was hard rowing against Michigan, but I savored each win (I was a cox). Michigan has not always been the top club program. Purdue, ND, Marietta, Georgia Tech are just as good as Michigan.

I love your arrogance.

IRA's during that time period pretty much came down to Purdue and Michigan.

Thats all I need to hear haha.

2001 http://www.row2k.com/results/resultspage.cfm?UID=671930&cat=1 Michigan over Purdue.

2002 http://www.row2k.com/results/resultspage.cfm?UID=621692&cat=5 Michigan over Purdue.

2003 http://www.row2k.com/results/resultspage.cfm?UID=500416&cat=2 Michigan over Purdue.

2004 I can't find a Purdue/Michigan 1v head to head. Michigan's 1v was not very good that year, so I'll assume Purdue won.

2005 http://www.dadvail.org/?

2005 Michigan won Dad Vail, and I'm pretty sure that was really the only year they sent a 1v (it usually conflicted with ECAC) of the years you mention.

I'm really interested into what memories you have of "Kicking Michigan's ass". Can you please elaborate? I mean if you were a cox of a lightweight varsity 4 or something, I guess its believable.

I weighed 115 during my undergrad at Purdue, what do you think I coxed. It definitely was not varsity HW 4's and 8's.  That was for the fall distance season and in the spring sprint season I switched over to rowing stern on LW's 8's.

Michigan very rarely fields lightweight crews.  When they do it is comprised of 2F level frosh and 3v guys that are light enough. There is no doubt in my mind that you beat many Michigan crews rowing lightweight.

That being said, no event at the IRA has ever come down to Michigan and Purdue.  Especially not lightweight.

I did not know that about Michigan crew with regards to the lightweights. I had a couple high school friends with Michigan crew (one on the women's varsity and one was with the men's HW). They never talked to me about their lightweight crews.

Purdue does a decent job "recruiting" (about as well as you can recruit for a club team) cross country runners for coxwains and for light weight's. I guess that is where we are coming from.

posted. would like to draw special attention to that alumni result. not only was pez in that boat, helping to solidify his ascension to the elite ranks of rowing, he also raced for a world championship a few weeks ago.
