MD/DC Football Recruiting

Submitted by BlueintheBlood on
Being from MD, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised at the amount of talent that seems to be coming out of the State. I know it's no Texas or Florida by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems that pretty consistently over the past couple of years there has been at least one Elite (5*) player from MD; and a likelihood of this happening again with offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio. Rivals link: http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1055648 It also seem that we are recruiting pretty consistently out of the Mid-Atlantic region(Maryland in particular) since RR has arrived. Can anyone tell me, since I did not follow FB that much in High School, has MD always been a place which U of M has tapped into for talent, or this just recently? I know that several kids from DeMatha (my cousin plays there) were given offers last year for instance. Is this an area where we are trying to develop some pipelines with, because I know right now the general thinking of the majority of kids is that if you are good enough, Penn State or OSU are the places to go? However, A lot of the schools that are producing these elite players (DeMatha, Good Counsel are the two consistent/main producers) are from very good private schools where education is actually quite good. I would think that this would give us an advantage. What are your all thoughts?

Remember, Dhani went to Winston Churchill HS in Potomac, MD...actually my former rival high school. Also, Richrod seems to be familiar with the area as Pat Lazear went to Wheaton HS in Silver Spring, MD.

Maryland hasn't always been a stronghold for Michigan. I think Rodriguez is recruiting MD/DC more than the previous regime. Doug Dutch was from DC and Dhani Jones was from MD, but those are the only two that I can think of from those two locations.

H.D. Woodson, Dunbar, and Gonzaga are three big powerhouses in D.C. You may remember Doug Dutch came from Gonzaga. Im sure RR has connections all over the Mid-Atlantic from his West Virginia Days that maybe why we've started to recruit the area more.

I graduated from Gonzaga, and we haven't been a powerhouse lately. Our QB does have offers from UMD and UVa, though. The real powerhouses in the DC area are DeMatha and Good Counsel. They're both in Maryland, but they play in the DC catholic league. If you're talking about public schools, I think Ballou is pretty consistently good too.

I believe Cyrus Kouandjio's (sp?) brother was a 4-star 2010 recruit that signed with 'Bama. Michigan was on his list for a very short time early in the process. 'Bama has also offered Cyrus. It looks like DT Croce of Maryland is interested in UM, and vice-versa. And hopefully we can keep on DC's DT McReynolds. Position of need

I attended a large high school in Maryland. One day during my Senior year I decided to count the number of kids wearing clothing from different colleges. Maryland finished second. Michigan finished first. That should tell you all you need to know about the popularity of Michigan in Maryland.

came from Laurel, Maryland. Oops...wrong sport. Seriously, JoPa has made Maryland a personal recruiting fiefdom. Last years team had 14 players from Maryland, including Navarro Bowman and Evan Royster.
