Pitt has now won 9 of its last 10, including road wins at NCSU, Northwestern and Syracuse and home wins in last 2 over UNC and UVa. The Panthers are now 4-0 in ACC, tied atop the conference with Miami

It means nothing now, but in the NCAA Men’s Basketball NET Rankings in games through January 2, Michigan (8-5, 2-0 in conference) is ranked 13th out of 14 Big Ten teams at 82. Only Minnesota (6-6) at 243 is ranked lower than Michigan among Big Ten teams. Pitt (11-4, 4-0 in conference), at 71, currently is ranked seventh among ACC teams. Not sure if the 91-60 win over Pitt that then was in the middle of a three-game losing streak qualifies as a "signature non-conference win".

Michigan's overwhelming win over Maryland (10-4, 1-2 in conference), currently ranked 49th in those NET rankings, looks a bit more like a "signature win".

They still blew multiple chances at picking up other quality OOC wins and that CMU loss is going to be an anchor all year but, yeah, if this team can win 11-12 games in the conference that might be enough.

Michigan has moved up to 81 and now is 12th among Big Ten teams today in NCAA NET rankings for games through January 3. ahead of Nebraska (84) and Minnesota (237).

For perspective, tonight’s opponent at Crisler, Penn State, is 11-3 and 2-1 in conference (wins at Illinois 74-59 and at home against Iowa 83-79; loss at home to Michigan State 67-58) and on a five-game winning streak, but is only 60th in NET rankings.
