MBB Career Blocked Shots
In the podcast they talked about how Teske is the best basket protector in the Beilein era. Maybe even before the Beilein era, though Udoh was mentioned. So I thought I'd look up career blocked shots here.
Just before Beilein, Courtney Sims had 213 blocks, which is #1.*
2) Chris Webber - 174
3) Eric Riley - 168
4) Ekpe Udoh - 159
5) Brent Petway - 146
Jon Teske is #18 with 51. Of course shots altered doesn't show up in this stat.
*Lies, damn lies, and statistics. I wondered why I didn't see Roy Tarpley, so I looked him up. He has 232 (69+66+97) career blocks on record - there's no count listed for his first year, so no total. Although there are 10 league only blocks for that year. So that's at least 242.
Per stats archive notes, blocks weren't kept for all games before 1976-77.

Roy Tarpley... so much potential. Just too much booze and drugs.

His 1985 team got a #1 seed in the tournament, I believe. Villanova upset them early for a major disappointment, though.
We really owe it to Villanova to shatter their dreams in the tournament one of these days.

Yes, the '84-'85 team had a #1 seed in the '85 tourney and lost to #8 seed Villanova, which went on to win. Wonder what it would have been like with a shot clock.

Interesting. Curious what the effects of changes to the game will have on the ability to hit some of those numbers in the future. From shot clock changes, to 3 point shooting, to early draft entry...

Webber got his in 2 years. OTOH those records have been vacated (per note on his stats page). And with the increase in 3pt shooting, you'd think there'd be less opportunity for a big to accumulate so many blocks.

I also think that blocked shots, while impressive and interesting, don't necessarily reflect defensive performance. I have seen players over the years highlighted by Brian and Dylan as guys who try to block everything....even at the cost of giving up offensive rebounds or layups on the backside. I think Sims and Udoh were like that at times.
On the flip side, Teske will have plenty of chances the next two years to pile up some stats.
