Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Very busy day for Michigan Athletics today. Might as well just recap it in one big thread.

#2 Men's Swimming & Diving leads after Day 3 at the B1G Championships by 193 points. The final day of the B1G Championships are tomorrow night at Canham Natatorium.

Standings after day 3-

Michigan 599
Indiana 406
Ohio 354
Penn State 265
Purdue 219.5

Wisconsin 207
Iowa 130
Northwestern 107
Michigan State 84.5

Softball, unfortunately, had both of their games today cancelled due to rain. Not known when or if they will be made up. They were supposed to play a highly ranked UCLA team.

  • #13 Hockey tied ohio tonight, 2-2
  • #20 Water Polo who has been struggling mightly thus far in 2014 got two huge wins today to bring their record to 5-10. They upset #15 UC Santa Barbara, 11-10 in OT and easily beat Azusa Pacific, 14-8.
  • Women's Lacrosse played their first-ever home game in program history tonight at Oosterbaan, losing a close one 12-10 to Marquette. Still looking for that big first win for the program.
  • Just finishing up minutes ago, #26 Men's Tennis beats state, 4-3 in a thriller final match.
  • Baseball lost to #6 NC State today, 3-0 out in Cary, NC. They play a double-header tomorrow against notre dame at Noon and appalachian state at 4pm.
  • #8 Women's Gymnastics picked up two wins tonight, beating #23 Kent State and BYU. Their score of 197.200 was runaway.
  • Men's Track & Field is in 8th place at the B1G Indoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, OH
  • Women's Track & Field is in FIRST place at the B1G Champiosnhips, also SPIRE Institute.

The softball games were listed as cancelled, not postponed, which means that they will not be made up.

Softball does have 1 more game on the schedule against UCLA, Wednesday night at 7 pm PST in Westwood.  I suppose it's possible that they turn that into a doubleheader, but it seems unlikely.  Michigan plays the Utah Valley Wolverines and the Long Beach State 49ers on Saturday in Lakewood, California, weather permitting, with a game against Oregon State on Sunday morning.

I've been rooting for UM with all my might since I began grad school two years ago, but am upest to hear they beat my Santa Barbara Gauchos in water polo!

I'm really surprised Michigan doesn't have a stronger men's Track and Field program. I know they have a new coach from Auburn. Maybe he will turn it around.

Looking at the poll and at Michigan's schedule, it's not entirely unreasonable.

Michigan's 10 losses are to #2, #4, #7, #10, #11, #14 (twice), #16, #18 and #19.  Michigan has a win against #15.  So Michigan is 1-10 against the top 19 teams and 4-0 against everybody else (including 2 wins against teams also receiving votes, so presumably in the top 30).  You can certainly make a case for a #20 ranking, even with that record.

Yup, Men's swimming & diving is running away with the Conference Championship. BTW, I'd like to emphasize how astounding that U.S. Open record in the 800 free relay was. 6:09! Are you EFFING kidding me? ! That means that the individual times for each and every member of the relay AVERAGED 1:32.low! Also, I'm still amused by the circumstances that led to the team being ranked #2. The Defending National Champions began the season ranked #1; they've won every meet. They went to #2 when they had a closer than expected win against Ohio State. You might have noticed from the B1G Meet that OSU is pretty good this year. Whatever. We swimmers & divers are lucky enough to have a meet at the end of the season where everyone who is good enough gets to swim & dive. We shall see. . . And many thanks to all my brothers and sisters who want to talk about non-revenue sports.
