M back up to 2nd in latest Directors Cup standings

Michigan is back up to 2nd in the latest Director's Cup standings, thanks to good showings from Men's and Women's basketball.  Obviously Stanford will always be on top by a mile, so 2nd place is really what programs are vying for (inasmuch as they're vying for a place at all).

The Big Ten leads all Division I conferences in the top-10 each with four institutions – Michigan (2nd), Wisconsin (3rd), Penn State (4th), Minnesota (9th).

State is 29th.

Whaaaaat!  How is this possible.  I was told that Michigan athletics were underwhelming.  I mean we didn't even win a championship in football, basketball or hockey.

What "Michigan athletics" means to people can vary. For most people looking at big athletic departments, it's football, basketball, and some combo of baseball/hockey/lacrosse. While the non-revenue sports are boosting Michigan to #2 in the director's cup, I would gladly sacrifice all the non-revenue sports earning us points for a national title in any one of the big sports.

Michigan has a #2 director's cup ranking primarily due to wrestling, women's swimming, women's CC, and field hockey.

At first I saw UM's men's basketball team at ninth and was like, ok. Then I saw wisconsin's men's basketball was ranked 3rd. I don't know how this works.

I’ve been wondering if next year is the year for a school to pass Stanford.  There is going to be a lot of tumult at some of their top non-revenue sports on account of the admissions scandal.  Maybe a one-year blip provides a chance for us to win the whole thing.
