Look what is happening with basketball: football takes longer

We need to find a way to ban the impatient ninnies from posting the anti-RichRod crap. The Bo era is officialy over. Michigan cant stockpile studs and steamroll teams any more. Have you forgotten how frustrating it was to watch speed kill us? Michigan brought in one of the best coaches in college football to renovate our program. Anybody who advocates bringing in Les Miles has not met Les Miles. Wonder why Lloyd Carr retired when he did? Other than seeing the game passing his philosophy by (and remember when Lloyd was the Def Coord of a rock-ribbed D? Where did that go under Lloyd?) Lloyd knew the cupboard was bare. Other than Brandon Graham (oh, and the punter), how many junior or senior studs are there on defense? Maybe Warren? I watched a tape of the Rose Bowl 97/98 Champs.....must have been 10 future NFL players (Woodson, Hutchinson, Jansen, Tuman, Griese, Streets, Gold, Foote and more) So to paraphrase, "where's the (prime) beef"? Look at basketball. Beilein went 10-22 his first year, and had all sorts of clowns throwing up 3s. It was as painful as last year's football. But when you bring in a top coach, and you tell him to change the program and the culture....that's a big picture, high level way of operating. And one would assume Michigan fans have enough intelligence to realize that change can be painful. So we have our hotshot coach and life still aint easy....but Chicken Little and the anti RR crowd, well, I look at you as Ohio State fans. The BS you post about how RR has to go, it only makes us look bad to outsiders. Hey, if you scare off the recruits, you can make yourself correct about how we have a bad situation. Assholes.

i have been making this same comparison. the sheer number of players involved makes ftball a much more difficult transition but let's look at each case: the bball team was led by tommy amaker, a coach that relied on motion offense with a lot of one on one ball (similar to what calipari runs, some sets similar to duke). he had pretty decent players but not nearly good enough to truly excel (i'll give him a couple seasons that injuries really screwed us over). the bball was often times painful to watch and the lack of actual plays made things unbearable at times and extremely ineffective. the first year under beilein was a complete 180. we didn't have much talent and came out with a horrible record but the offensive execution and ball movement was 10x better. at times it was ugly as the players made the transition but this smoothed over as year 2 came around and players became more comfortable with the system. we still sorely lacked playmakers and front court size but had a very competitive team. over the next couple years it will improve even more. the ftball team was led by a one lloyd carr. a great coach but it was obvious the game had passed him by a bit towards the end. we were relying on a similar brand of ftball as osu except lacked the player development. both of us plotted our way through the big ten relying on better talent but struggled in bowl games against faster and more physical teams. rich rod came in and it was a complete 180 in offensive system. we had flashes of great execution last year (first half of penn state game, 42 pts against purdue, etc) but by and large it was very ugly. this year we see a definite improvement in offense over last year. however, where the comparison loses a bit of muster is the defense. our defense this year is horrible and we sorely lack the playmakers to improve it. it'll come eventually with recruting. young players also can't make the same impact in ftball as bball. another reason that the change will be slowed a bit. rich rod needs time. he'll excel but i only hope he doesn't lose his mind first with all the pressure and other nonsense going on. next year he should be expected to put together around a .500 campaign in the big ten and get to 7 or 8 reg season wins. year 4 is where it will truly take off.

...being a free country and all that I guess you really can't ban them, just have to live with it. Other sites I've seen have far worse than mgoblog. Great post.

on both sides of the ball. it's hard enough to get those players to come to your school never mind the fact that you have to develop them once they get to your school. in basketball a turnaround can happen with just one player in one season and that guy doesn't need any experience at the college level. heck chances are the top basketball prospects played against better competition in AAU than they'll see in college.

A ture blast and shout out if ever there was one! I like it--and love the lack of tact. It's Message Board WWE and fellas, THIS is what it's all about. Now lookie here, son: When Rodriguez was brought in, whether on this or other boards, Michigan was going to ROLL. RR+Michigan Talent; RR does "less with more"--RRwon with "inferior talent" and as you said, the "game had passed Lloyd Carr by" Then after 3-9: It was all "Hey now, lookie at what Rod does from Year 1 to Year 2!" "He has HIS quarterbacks coming in" "He's getting more of his guys" and "Look out, Gergory Robinson has Super Bowl rings, and if you mix that with a lil chocolate milk--holy shit" Now of course, I'm SURE*TOTALLY*SURE that EVERY Michigan fan and MgoPoster thought UM would go 6-6 this year. Y'know, there's been a LOT of backtracking going on. At 5-5, we have the people jumping out of ths shadows who mysteriously weren't there at 4-0. I don't blame you, you are defending the hire, and that's all good by me. It's just that our fan base has backtracked and had almost every supportive stance for Rodriguez shattered by--Rodriguez himself! And a regressive performance on the field over the last, well, pretty much since Indiana hasn't helped. As for football taking longer: THAT is a hot potato. There are many examples of that not being the case. Dantonio at MSU; Tressel at OSU; Kelly at Cincinnati; Weis at ND (years one and two); Saban at Alabama; Stoops at Oklahoma. And you can recruit 25 guys a year in football--and get rid of a few holdovers from the last guy--and remake your team pretty quick. Should it really take five years to rebuild Michigan? If so, then Michigan isn't really all that and a bag of chips--like many in our fan base think it is. In fact, the "chicken littles" expect more and really DO think Michigan is MICHIGAN--and don't want to hear a litany of excuses. The anti-Rich crowd doesn't think UM was stripped bare and left wanting at so many positions. And it doesn't sit back and blame Lloyd Carr for everything--especially retiring because, as you believe, he knew Michigan would be "the suck" Now I'm not really sure about this so-called mandate to "change the culture"--but IF that is the case, IF Michigan administration really believed the philosophy of pro-style offense had passed UM by--and man, for the life of me I REFUSE to believe that is the case--then Rodriguez still doesn't deserve any more time than is necessary to make a sound judgment about whether he was the right choice. A coach is still a coach, a recruiter is still a recruiter, and if he is both, then by Year 3 we ought to see substantial improvement. And don't FUCKING talk to me about "three DC's in three years"--Shafer was RODRIGUEZ'S and no one else's fault, and that is the Strike One that he must be held accountable for. The Pro-Rich crowd has been louder and more boisterous and more vitriolic than the anti-Rich crowd and even than the crowd that questions Rodriguez (a club of which I am a proud member). The backtracking and blind faith put in Rodriguez has at times been appallingly (yes, I said "appallingly) laughable: Both horrible AND funny. Assholes.

my thoughts exactly original poster. both of these coaches are very smart. football is a much, much longer process. in basketball, you can realistically recruit a completely new team in one season. NICK NOLTE. BLUE CHIPS.
