Justin Boren gave my kitten cancer

Submitted by Bane of Gargamel on

I thought that this was interesting enought that I'd finally get off my ass and create an account on the new site.  Personally, I don't really give a crap about what Boren has to say but I thought that the Mike Hart quotes were, at the very least, topic worthy - especially when one considers Hart's response to the whole Harbaugh debacle...

BoG - Why were Hart's comments noteworthy considering what he said about Harbaugh? Care to clarify? Anyway, this guy is really a piece of work. I have no other words to explain it.

Certainly.  Not suggesting that I think Hart should have taken Boren to task but, given the cheese grater to the crtoch response he had for Harbaugh's derogatory comments about the program ("Not a Michigan Man", "Wish he had never played here"), I find it interesting that his response to Boren's continued comments are about as rough as a kitten's tongue (DAMN! I just referenced a kitten twice... I'd suck as a super-villian).  So this causes me to speculate.  Possibly the explanation is simple: Boren was a teammate and Harbaugh an old alum he has never met or maybe he's too busy getting ready for the NFL and doesn't have time for inane drama.  Then again maybe this is confirmation that Boren really was coddled by Coach Carr and Hart, having had a taste of a Barwis workout, knew that he couldn't take it.  Hell, I don't know.  Now I'm just talking out my ass.  As always, this is nothing more than sound and fury, signifying nothing.

"(Tressel and his staff) coach with class and emphasize education," he says. "They put what's most important first. Each player is important. There's no bashing of players. You're not going to be belittled. Each player has feelings. They treat each person with respect." " Nice dig at RR not emphasizing education or class. And does anyone else think that description of OSU practice seems to imply that there are no men on the football team? the "Jim Tressel drinks wine coolers" shirt seems more truthful now.

Wait, don't I recall reading in the Detroit papers less than six months ago about how Justin was upset by his dad screaming at him on the sidelines, and he was glad for the protection from the screaming at Michigan? That sensitive flower enjoys being booed? I doubt it.

This story can officially die now. Face it - players and coaching staffs form strong relationships, and these relationships are more important than traditions, history, facilities, academics or any other grandeurs of a university that you and I like to think of as the be-all, end-all of young adult life. It’s not inconceivable for Boren to have grown close with both coaching staffs, and it’s not inconceivable that Boren felt sadness once Carr and his staff was replaced. For this one kid – and that can’t be stressed enough, it’s just One. Kid. - to feel a little displaced isn’t either the end of the world or a greater indictment on one program vs. another. Everyone should take a deep breath and realize how insignificant this is – Boren, the only one who has to live with this, is happy now, and the world keeps spinning. To take pot shots at the kid for going home to help his father’s snow plow business? Oh what a horrible human being! Let’s just get on with life and realize that the effects aren’t nearly as great as people and journalists want them to be.

Nobody's taking potshots for him going home to help plow snow.  And nobody's unhappy that he left.  It's where he went and the manner of his departure.

If he had gone anywhere, I'd have felt the same as I did when anyone else transfers: Thanks for your time at Michigan, good luck to ya.  And like with Justin Fargas, I'd take a smidge of pride in yet another NFLer with Wolverine ties, if he made it there.

But he went to OSU.  You don't go there if you're a Wolverine.  Ergo, he is not.

Additionally, he took potshots at the staff upon departure.  Never anything specific, which is to say, nothing provable, just generic undefendable crap.  Even Ryan Mallett, who may or may not be a lazy selfish weed smoker depending on who you believe, did not take parting shots.

Besides: you should see the OSU attitude toward players who commit the crime of growing up in Ohio and committing to Michigan.  It's disgusting, the way they talk, and ridiculously hypocritical of them to criticize M fans for being hostile to this guy.  (Not talking about phone threats - those are over the line.)

This: "But he went to OSU. You don't go there if you're a Wolverine. Ergo, he is not." had me dying of laughter.

I totally agree - I wish he didn't go to Ohio State and I wish he would have transferred with a little more dignity. Boren's an odd case considering his dad played at U-M and his brother was always going to TOSU, but outside of a few minor coincidences, this story isn't as big as bloggers, fans and the media is making it out to be. Boren was an average player on an average line last year, and when the revolution comes, he's first out because of various reasons. This happens all the time with regime changes, whether at major college football or at Blimpie Burger: coaches have their own styles and some people leave because they aren't a part of the plans. It wasn't as if Boren was forced out, and he ends up happy in his new home. No big loss. I think it's important in the internet age to take a deep breathy. Mainstream journalists base their stories off a few opinions on blogs and message boards, and like Brian said, the facts are of little consequence. But fans blow things overboard, too. I don't hate Justin Boren! Also, other than the fact that he wore the Maize and Blue for two years, I have no real reason to love him, either. He's just a guy, who happened to transfer to Michigan's biggest rival. So what? He has a short lifespan in football, and he has to make the most of it. If he feels TOSU is the best route for him to get to the NFL over U-M now - that's reasonable, but a different topic altogether - it's foolish to wish ill will on him. And like someone said in the comments section today, the "idiots" who do say stuff on the contrary are, in fact, idiots. Maize and Blue idiots, but idiots nonetheless.
