Josh Helmholdt chat on freep today

I did a quick scan of recent posts and didn't see this linked yet. Chances are I just missed it somewhere else but just in case: http://www.freep.com/article/20090220/SPORTS06/90220049/1054/Transcript… If it was already posted, please begin the perfunctory flogging of the double poster. Nothing earth shattering for readers of this blog, but good for the daily fix in all things recruiting.

Most of the info was readily available to those who frequent this and the linked blogs, but it is always great to see a chat or an article on UM. I found it interesting, though, that he thought UM should have had a better record because of the personnel it had on defense. I thought that the defense had been so bad in 2007 that all of the returning starters were sort of a good news/bad news situation.

With both parents as grads, and siblings there as well? C'mon, it's a lock for MSU. I'll be shocked if Gholston doesn't go to OSU.

If Vernon and William talked at all, maybe...of course OSU hasn't even offered him, so... And White isn't the MSU lock he was once thought to be. One of his brothers got into some legal trouble at MSU, and Austin himself got an MIP during his junior year I believe. That combined with basically everyone saying that Austin's ego is completely out of control, both UM and MSU seem to be taking their time when it comes to his recruitment. As it stands at this moment, I don't think either school would be sad to see Austin White go far, far away.

on many fronts. Recruits, Michigan Fans and Michigan Alumni will all be watching this team with more scrutiny than I can ever remember(no more "mulligans"-like we ever had one). Having said this, I believe Michigan will have a statement year. Yes, the supporting cast(ninja's with winged helments) that Tate and Denard will inherit is far from a proven entity. This will only add to the excitement for those watching. Yes, freshmen mistakes will be made by our young QB's. The difference will be noted early when teams don't know WTF just happened and there is a Michigan Ninja standing with a football in their endzone. When Threet left Michigan there was a good reason- He saw with his own eyes what Tate could do with this offense, He knew his days were about to end. Mallet also knew that he wasn't the guy to run this type of offense. Coach Rod dust off the play book-your era of Michigan Football is about to begin.

Hmmm. Kind of hard for Threet to have "seen with his own eyes what Tate could do with this offense" considering there have been no real practices since the season has ended. I sure as hell hope that you're not foolish enough to imply that Threet was somehow scared off by what Tate looked like in unsupervised 7 on 7 non contact drills where they aren't even wearing pads because, chances are, you would be completely wrong about that.

Yeah, because athletes have no idea how to evaluate how good another player is. Having played baseball through high school, it was pretty obvious when my team got a talented player, even if he was a freshman. Whatever Threet's reasons, I can't see him transferring if Forcier looked anything but good.

Threet had to redshirt as a freshman because of the transfer. So even if he didn't beat out Mallett, he would have had at least one year of eligibility remaining after Mallett went on to the NFL. If Mallett left after his junior year, then Threet would have had two years to be the starter (assuming another recruit didn't beat him out). It's really not that difficult to figure out.

I liked the recap it was nice. Nothing new, but still good to hear from another mouth. Just one thing though, a kicker question ? Really ? You can ask anything and you ask about the kicker. I hate how bad our kicking has been, but you ask how good our kicker recruit is? Just dumb... Really dumb.

What I'm saying is after Threet had the chance to see what Tate could do with his own eyes during practice, Threet knew he couldn't compete. I've played enough sports to know when someone is better than I am and Threet is no different. It would also be a safe assumption that Threet noticed how the coaches were responding to Tate during these drills and Threet did the math. Hell, I think Threet is making a big mistake by leaving. He is giving up one of the best seats on the field to watch a Michigan game-not to mention the chance for a great education. To me that's simple math-go figure.
