Join the rugby team. Those dudes are top blokes, they know how to party and they're a really inclusive group. My best friends from U of M today were from my days on the rugby team (some of 'em are nuts).
Its dangerous of course and while they accept beginners with a range of experience and athletic ability it can be pretty demanding. They party hard so be warned if that's not your thing. But we also had a bunch of dudes who were stone cold sober non-drinkers so there's room for everybody (even those guys had some screws loose). Women's team seemed like a good community too.
Good luck and welcome to U of M.
I concur. As the saying goes, "Soccer is a gentleman's sport played by hooligans. Rugby is a hooligan sport played by gentlemen." But mostly, it's about drinking and singing to take your mind off how much it physically hurts.
Give blood. Play rugby.
Drinking beers after a rugby match is an amazing feeling and experience. Beer never tastes more delicious...
^^^This community might need some "mentoring", and based on your MGoUserName, it appears to be a good fit.
You'll have an opportunity to sign up for a ton of stuff at Festifall. It's a day during the first week of classes where virtually all student orgs and clubs have a table on the Diag and you can learn more about them and join their mailing lists.
Your curiosity and open-mindedness your first week as a freshman will cause your future upperclassmen-self a lot of pain and annoyance when you're still on mailing lists for clubs/orgs that you signed up for that fateful day and have not yet been removed despite countless emails to the aforementioned clubs/orgs.
