Hoops Hello: Aubrey Dawkins

Submitted by Raoul on

Aubrey Dawkins has committed to Michigan.

6-4 New Hampton wing Aubrey Dawkins has committed to Michigan, he confirmed to @FlyerHoops. Picked the Wolverines over the Flyers

***NOTE: Sam Webb recently said Dawkins is closer to 6-6.

EDIT: Sam has a story out with some post-commit quotes from Dawkins:

“It was a tough decision, but a degree from Michigan carries more weight than one from Dayton,” Dawkins said.  Not necessarily because it’s better academically, but because it’s Michigan.”

. . .

“They [the Michigan coaching staff] see me as a guy that is similar to Glenn Robinson… athletic, lean… just along those lines.  They want me to play the wing spot.”

Why this kid's dad didn't offer him when he's right down the road? I didn't even realize this was Johnny Dawkins kid until it was mentioned on Twitter today. I'm just baffled as to why his dad woulnd't have offered him.

It's bizarre that his dad didn't want a kid that resembles him and give him a world class education at Stanford. Oh heck, Stanford is a basketball factory bringing in five star talent- that's why probably.

Something just seems a little off there. He was going to let his son go to Dayton without offering him if Michigan did not come along.

There could be any number of reasons, including personal reasons that wouldn't be made public if they factor in, not to mention how difficult it is for anyone to make it through admissions at Stanford. You have no basis to conclude there's anything "off" here.

So I was wrong there. But Stanford did bring in 4 top 100 players (according to 247) and I think only had four open spots. So Dawkins not being a huge recruit at least played a role in it. But that's all I got, I don't really follow basketball recruiting well enough to say anymore one way or the other.

Where are all of the negative Nancy's at now? Silence for once. More good news on Monday. Gotta love it.

Welcome aboard.  Do feel bad Dayton on this one because it is a long term dance for them, and they did troll OSU nicely this March.  But well...you are in Ohio and such.  A.D. down C.H. to go.

If Huff is the last piece won't effect playing time next year since he sits a year so for those who don't follow this stuff that class this appears to be the concept.

Minute hogs go to Irvin and Caris - roles similar Nik, GR3, etc: 33-35 a night.  Their have clear backups now each (think Spike to Burke) in Dawkins and MAAR respectively.  Most nights maybe 6-8 minutes.  That filles your 2/3 minutes up nicely and the Spike/Walton Jr takes care of 1.  (6 players)

This leaves some combo of Donnal / Doyle / Max / Chatman / Wilson up front.

5 is easier to figure out in terms of Donnal starting and getting Jordan Morgan RS FR type minutes (24ish) and just due to know one else having the size or bulk, Doyle gets a good portion of the remaining at 5.  You hope he can do 10ish.  Maybe "no one can stop him in the Big 10" Max is forced in there 5-6 - undersized at 5 but if top 2 get in foul trouble no real other option.   Being very young big men (Doyle / Donnal) minutes are going to be determined my foul trouble quite a few nighs, esp in conference.

That leaves 4 as Chatman / Wilson and some Max.   The guess here is Chatman will be doing 25+ and Wilson/Max something like 10/5.

This creates a 11 man rotation.  So do you RS someone?  The "obvious" guy is Doyle but he is also at a position that is the least interchangeable on the team.  So you do RS Wilson who has been rocketing up recruiting boards as you can get away with maybe 5-8 minutes a night of Irvin at the 4 in a pinch (leaving Dawkins more time).  Don't know - Wilson with 15 more lbs would be pretty darn cool.

But at minimum we are talking a 10 man rotation so we'll have fouls to give.  And a group that should be well rested outside of Irvin / Caris due to the 1A and 1B nature of most positions now.

I'm not totally sold on MAAR, but I really like what Dawkins brings to the table. It's nice to have a guy with hops like he has.

I'm not sold on MAAR either but he definitely provides depth. Dawkins will probably be the better of the two late additions. I'll take long athletic dudes all day at Michigan. Beilein has a the knack for finding gems.

Hit the weight room and the practice facilities boys, were gonna need your best.

can hit an open 3, he will succeed here and we will all be happy.  His stroke looks good, so I am pretty confident that he will be an asset at some point.
