Hints of Juwan Howard's offense philosophy

Not sure if anyone posted this on the board but the assistant coaches basically told us on what the offense will be like. Any talks of having two bigs should be put into rest because NBA style offense with a sprinkle of JB's offense don't allow for having two bigs on the team. If you look at Miami Heat in which Juwan was the assistant coach under Spoelstra, they're about pacing and spacing with PnR.

His PF recruiting is a bit different than JB's. Not targeting alot of stretch 4s. Henry Coleman, Terrance Williams, and Lance Ware are probably not guys that would be getting interest from JB as they're much closer to traditional PF than a stretch big. It'll be interesting to see what we roll out this year and the years to come. We can safely assume 2021 offense will be much different than 2019 offense as Howard will have his own guys.

I agree there will be a significant difference between "now" and "then". And this is going to be a huge advantage for Juwan in the recruitment of that large 2020 class-as in he can truthfully tell each recruit that "You will have an opportunity to play immediately!!!". There may be 5 freshmen starting.

Dont tell James Voskuil. I knew him from the Engineering lab and boy was he pissed when Fisher started all five together...  He thought Fish sold out. But what he didn't realize is the synergy of the five playing together was greater than the individuals.

The two big thing should have been laid to rest because pretty much no one, not just JB, does that anymore. It's highly unlikely that's a coincidence.

Just win the games baby! No one ever complains about a teams offense or defense when they are winning. Need a good season to help getting all these top athletes. I love the direction of the program!

I don't know why anybody would think Howard would decide to install an offense from 1987.  Did people forget he was considered an up-and-coming coach in today's NBA and cut his teeth with a progressive franchise in Miami?   I guess the logic is "derrrr Howard was a big, so therefore he likes bigs and will base his offense around post ups derrrr".

I like these money quotes from Eisley:

"up-tempo, position-less basketball."

"I think the pace at which we play could be a little bit faster. But still, the premium on guys taking care of the ball, being able to make good decisions, making shots"

Caveats about "coach speak" , "proof in the pudding", etc.  but I do like what I hear.

We knew they were going to run more (it would be nearly impossible for them to run less) but still encouraging to hear. NBA is a tempo league so it makes sense.

I think fast break X could be a thing next year. He has really good body control at speed and in addition to his floor vision he can finish at the rim once you get the trees out of there.

Tye biggest thing I was to see is how he coaches offensive rebounds.  Beilein drastically de-emphasized it, preferring to run back on D.  I have to think Juwan will be more in the middle.
