Has Michigan won against MSU in a controversy?

Submitted by IronDMK on

Michigan faithful, I know there have been a few games in which Michigan has lost to msu and there is some controversy in some of those games.  Granted, sometimes UM just got beat... but we can all think of a number of games that were lost with the help of some questionable actions of the referees/time keepers/etc.

My question is this: Has Michigan ever won a game in the same manner?  I cannot think of a single instance and it's not because I'm a homer.  I can't think of a single instance where this is the case.  Was there a call/no call in any game that DIRECTLY led to the game ending in our favor (not a woulda-coulda-shoulda situation).

That said, I would actually relish such a victory for the good guys.  Walk a mile in those shoes sort of thing.  Granted, I'd much rather celebrate an old fashioned kick-yo-ass victory.

Adrian Arrington did not get a foot down in the endzone but it was ruled a touchdown. The game was not close and MSU sucked so it didn't matter much. More importantly, that was the day Bonderman shut down the Yankees in game 4!

I remember in the 2005 PSU game, Avant landed with his foot partially out-of-bounds but counted as a catch during that final drive, which drove PSU fans crazy.  Of course, I think they got some equally-cheap play on the drive before to take the lead, so it kind of worked out.

Wasn't it during the Purdue game where Shazor hit that guy in the air , forced a fumble, and we recovered before it rolled out of bounds. If I remember right that was a game saving play, that was controversial.

We have not been gift wrapped a victory over MSU.  The main reason for that is because up until the John L. Smith years, the majority of our victories over them were blowouts.

Even during the Smith years, some of our wins weren't as close as the final score.  In the 2003 game, we were looking to go up 34-13 in the 4th quarter when Navarre was sacked and had a fumble which was returned 65 yards for a score.  That was the only reason MSU had a shot to tie it in the final seconds with a hail mary.  And the only reason the 2005 game went into overtime was because MSU got a bogus touchdown off a "fumble" return by Domata Peko, 74 yards for a touchdown.  That was not a fumble.  Henne's arm was clearly going forward.

The Larry Foote fumble recovery in the 2000 game, had it not stood, would have given MSU a 4th a goal from the 8.  There were over 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter when that play happened.  They would have kicked a field goal to be down 7-3.  No way they would have gone for it on 4th down.  That was the only time all game they were in our red zone and threatened to score anything.

I probably have a couple things jumbled up in my mind ... Wangler to Carter as time runs out ... Ufer HONK HONK HONK the replay they play all the time on the radio ... This was Indiana, away, right? 19 ... 89? Anyway, just before that awesome pass, I-really-forget-who (dammit) intentionally fumbled the ball out of bounds to stop the clock. That was ... ugly.

and it was the year of that game.  It was awesome seeing all my co-workers whine and cry about the lose.  They had a legit point for sure, but it was still funny.  There were a bunch of Michigan fans that worked there too, so it made for a fun week.  I also got to take in the classic Michigan/Northwestern game where A-train fumbled late there too.  He was lucky he didn't cost us 2 games that year.
