Back then, the press used to be a lot friendlier to the football program. When players got into fights at bars, for example, it didn't get reported. The press stuck to reporting football instead of making the sports section a tabloid social page.

I'll use a different sport for an example: wrestling. I can't imaging the Rexsteiner brothers making it through school in this era; their extracirricular "activities" would probably be splashed all over the sports page and the internet; this would eventually get them kicked off the team.

Going back to football, if RR were coaching in that era, at least ninety percent of the negative things that have been written about him since he got to UM wouldn't have been written. Basically, the era of restraint when it comes to deciding what qualifies as "news" is long gone, and I think we are worse off for it as sports fans, and in general.
