Glenn Robinson III draft decision. (Hints at leaving)

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on

Glenn Robinson III was interviewed yesterday and made a few comments that hint at this being his last few games as a Wolverine.  Tough decision when you factor in his draft stock at the moment.(30s)  It will be very interesting to see what McGary does as well.  I'm of the mind that both need to stay and cement their draft stock in a weaker draft next season but I'm starting to get that feeling that all 3 of Stauskas, McGary and Robinson are taking their talents to the NBA.   It's hard not to be happy for them individually but it's tough losing underclassmen every year.  If we grab this Title I don't think anyone would really be too concerned though so lets just smoke Kentucky today and let the chips fall where they may!

If GRIII can get a guaranteed first round contract, he should go.  John Beilein will probably be the first to tell him that.   He has imporved his outside shooting enough to enhance his position in the draft.

The only way to further his position would be to come back and be the featured player next year.  I don't know if that would gain him enough positions to make it financially wise.  Moreover, he would still be risking an injury that would take him out of the first round.

As for McGary, I have a feeling his stock may have fallen.  I don't know how many teams want to risk a first rounder in a fairly strong draft for a player with his history of injury.  If I were going to guess, it would be that Stauskas and GRIII go but Mitch stays.

I think GRIII leaving early after 2 years, following the Darius Morris path, is a mistake.  Trey Burke is a special  player and he needed 2 years to be NBA ready.  Tim Hardaway Jr. leaving after 3 year's is looking like the correct decision for him.  I think GRIII needs 3 years to develop before he is ready, following the Hardaway Jr. path.

Some posters have talked about how 2nd round picks don't get guaranteed deals per the CBA.  That's true.  But factually, if Robinson or McGary get pick in the firs portion of the second round, they're okay.  Here's the 2013 draft class:

Pick 31: Allen Crabbe -- 3 years, $2.63 million, 2 years, $1.69 million guaranteed.  Can become restricted free agent after three years, instead of four years like first-rounder.

Pick 32: Alex Abrines -- Foreign player staying in Europe

Pick 33: Carrick Felix -- 4 years, $3.3 million, 2 years, $1.32 million guaranteed.

Pick 34: Isaiah Cannon -- 3 years, $2.3 million, 2 years, $2.1 million guaranteed.  Restricted free agent after three years.

Pick 35: Glen Rice Jr. -- 2 years, $1.3 milion.  $900k guaranteed, can become restricted free agent after two years.

Pck 36: Ray McCallum -- 3 years, $2.3 million, 2 years, $1.38 million guaranteed.  Restricted free agent after year 3.

Pick 37: Tony Mitchell -- 3 years, $2.3 million, 2 years, $1.32 million guaranteed.  Restricted free agent after year 3.

Pick 38: Nate Wolters -- 3 years, $2.3 million, 2 years, $1.32 million guaranteed.  Restricted free agent after year 3.

Pick 39: Jeff Withey -- 2 years, $1.3 million, 1 year, $490k guaranteed, restricted free agent after year 2.

Pick 40: Grant Jerret -- This is the first player to not earn a contract.

Pick 41: Jamaal Franklin -- 3 years, $2.3 million, 2 years, $1.34 million guaranteed.  Restricted fre agent after year 3.

With the exception of Grant Jerrett, the first third of the second round did just fine for themselves, almost all earning over $1 million in guaranteed contract, and with the ability to enter free agency a year earlier than their first-round counterparts.  The year before, in a stronger draft, saw almost all of the second rounders get at least one year of guaranteed money, with picks 31-40 generally earning more guaranteed than picks 31-40 this past year.  If Mitch or GR3 miss the first round, they'll still probably be just fine.  The risk is greater if they stay in school.

But who cares about this -- Beat Kentucky!!

If we win it all then I could see them leaving but if we lose couldn't you see considering how close this team is that if they all came back we could win the whole thing next year.     GRIII IMO stay and work on his threes and dribbling and Mitch can come back and prove he is 100% healthy and Nik can come back and continue to improve.    But maybe I am just wishing but I hope we dont lose all 3 of them.       If we do then maybe Eron Harris picks Michigan then.  The transfer from West Virginia.

Go Blue beat Kentucky then Wisconsin and whoever is in the final!!!!

i can't blame him, either.  i'm not sure he improves much with another year of college - the skills are obviously already there, making it a formal full-time job will probably make him into a star.

With this draft being one of the best ever, and next years being potentially one of the worst, I think all three should return for one more year. That being said I understand if any of them decide to leave.

20 years removed, I'd love to go back. That I gave up a couple years for money I could have made anyway would be a tough thing to digest later in life.

That said, I'm not an elite athlete and I don't worry as much about a brain injury than athletes have to worry about their bodies.

I'd also say that the D-league, despite whatever pay, is going to be literally 100% removed from any TV or media coverage.  I don't know if the players enjoy the media (suspect some love it, some hate it, some meh) but its definitely going to be in media darkness.

has McGary even shown any inclination of going to the NBA after this season? i mean a lot of people was saying he was going to go into the draft after last season, but i don't ever remember even cryptic words about leaving coming from his mouth.
