Freshman Fumbles

Submitted by Ellipses Man on
The term,"Freshman Mistake," is usually used when talking about blown assignments or just something lacking in game prep. It really is a cover for something more mental and or lack thereof. There are many reasons why freshman make mistakes and sometimes it is game speed or something physical. But today we saw repeated freshman errors. And they were in the fundamental football realm of controlling the football and or not fumbling. And most of them, well I think all of them, came from our BACKUP running backs. Am I correct to say Shaw misjudged the opening kick off. Minor dropped a screen pass which hit his hands. That is football lingo for he,"should've caught it." And Grady fumbled after attempting to carry the entire LB corp of ND into the endzone for round two. Even the QB fumbled a snap. So here is my take on it. And like I said this is not a color-race thing here at all. And Fred Jackson chooses who startsat running back anyhow. At all. But the backup running backs need to bring their A game even when they do not start. Grady did in my opinion. I thought Kevin's TD was nothing shy of extraordinary. But Shaw and Minor's fumble were the worst. Misjudging that kickoff and dropping that screen pass really hurt. Are Shaw and Minor equally capable of doing what McGuffie did today? Yeah, Shaw especially. Shaw has mad skills and a huge upside. I still think Shaw will be the guy. But what separates them from McGuffie? To be honest I really do not know. But what I do know is it that when you are a high school super phenom and used to having the moons and other planets orbit around your every want. It is really difficult on the ego to find a way to perform without the glory of being the number one guy. And I think that is what leads to a majority of freshman mistakes. McGuffie is playing by default almost. I mean Brown gets freakishly hurt, Minor tends to cough it up, and here is Sam.....no attitude, works hard, no thrills no frills football player. These other guys in their mental game prep from here to the end of this season should mimic that in Sam. I would hate to see the Max Martin Mike Hart thing again. Mike Hart played because he was a man. He played tough and DID NOT FUMBLE. He was mentally there every down when it came to holding onto the football. i am not saying the other running backs are Cinderellas wicked step sisters here. But they half assed it in some ways. You have to learn to perform on every down, even if you are not the man or go to guy. If you can't Arena football awaits.

I'm relatively certain that Minor and Grady, who are upperclassman, lost 2 of the 4 fumbles.  That brings the number of games lost due to fumbles from those two to like 6.

Sometimes a guy will fumble and be an upperclassman and that fumble gets labeled as a frosh mistake. Fumbling is common and yet for some people not so common. Bad weather is a part of football. Mike Hart proved fumbling and bad weather were not synonymous. He proved bowl games and good weather though were good for fumbling. Minor and Grady played like backups, in that they committed the cardinal sin of running backs and that is fumbling the football. Last week you said I was nuts for saying Michigan was gonna lose. You were amped cause ND sucked so bad. Funny going back and reading that. If you are such a winner ShockFx why are you here on chat rooms with losers like me anyways man. geeezz. I mean cmon

E-Man, you kill me.

McG is starting because he has outstanding ability.  He may be a fumbler.  We don't know yet.  He has played all of three games.  He has a nice burst and great speed and shown the ability to find a hole and hit it.

Those are the reasons he is starting.  Not that "He is a man" or a "no attitude, works hard, no thrills no frills football player".  He is an effective runner.  Hart had silly amounts of attitude.  That didn't make him a lesser runner.

Please kill the psycho babble crap.

Well well well. You always make me feel like so welcome. You ever seen one flew over the cuckoos nest? In that scene where they are fighting and McMurhpy is yelling. Thats what this chat is. I know there are standard ways of communicating and I know there are reasons why Sam is starting. But you are just a flat out jerk armed with a keyboard hating life. I mean you are so awesome. Why are you here responding to losers like me on chat anyways man. I mean why not go on a vacation or take your wife somewhere exotic like Hawaii Mr Winner? Why chat at 131 am Mr Im so smart and a gift to earth. They say the adult stuff ruined the net. I think youre playing your part ruining college sports as well. All you are is negative and powerless vancam.

all this talk of fumbles brings back the repressed memory of the a-train fumbling against northwestern while trying to run the clock out in that 54-51 loss. lets just pray something like that never happens again

We blew a game like this to Illinois.  I think it ws in 1992 where we fumbled the ball over and over again and had to settle for a tie.  Crappy weather in that one also, as I recall.

E-Man, the reason I'm up right now is that I have a 1 year old that sleeps for crap and I wind up dealing with him a lot.

EDIT: Also, I'm in Chicago, so I pick up an hour.

The reason you bug me is that your are illogical.  As a former engineer, the lack of logic in an argument drives me nuts.   You, and others on this site, represent the good and the bad about the Michigan football fanbase.

The good: you seem to have a passion for the team, as do I.

The bad: you don't critically look at what is going on in front of you.  You spout off on topics as an expert, making assertions that have no basis in anything quantitative.  You act as if you could possibly know what is going on in someone's head.

I sit in the stands at games, hearing people say things that are completely baseless, and it bugs me that our fans, while having plenty of passion, completely lack a clue.  I hope that by pressing on poor arguements, that maybe, just maybe, a few people will start viewing this team in a more accurate light.

This is nothing against you personally.

logic and football have never gone together. plus, since none of us here are paid,"Unbiased," sports," journalists," I am here to rant homie. Sorry. I actually get a stipend from Brian to stir the pot up so to speak. I am kidding. I do not. It's one thing to ruin the cohesiveness and just mush mouth it on here like some crazy alabama fan would. But when people use their degrees on here to talk football and reasoning, it's equally laughable. It's actually hilarious. When I first chatted here I said if Sheridan starts and it goes bad, Sheridan would be almost ruined. I would say after his game today he's useless throwing the football. His confidence is zero. I cheered for that completion because I knew it would help his confidence. I also said Michigan would probably lose this week as well. Two things which made me the butt end of jokes from people with bigger brains than I. But it's football. And football is easy to predict for the most part. You know what I'll go retake Logic from my philosophy department for you. And I guarantee you once I get through that class my football IQ or logic will be at zero. The football demographic is what kills me. Lee Corso and Craig Nessler(?) get paid to speak to a certain person. Corso's predictions are way more in depth and even more difficult to understand how he thought that than mine are. If anything I am just taking the null. And Doug Flutie and Chris Fowler are more like you and or more like people who would blog here. People who project class and are esteemed. But continuing with the demographic, even Jesse Palmer has a demographic. So you have all these people with degrees trying to blog their way into the head of 20 something footballer for their local university. The more emotion you factor in and the less logic, the closer you are to the heart of football. And that is why it's Americas game! Football chatrooms are fun, sometimes they have the rules of country clubs and other times you feel as though you are on a city bus in SOHO at 2am.

E-Man, if I come off as a dick, that is not my intent and I apologize for that.  What I am trying to be is critical and analytical.  i would like all of us to elevate our understanding of what we are watching, myself included.

E-Man,  your most recent post just cleared everything up for me regarding your view of college football.  Nothing you say has any reasoning behind it, it is just a rant to stir thngs up.

Couple that with your previously stated goal of becoming a writer, and it all makes sense.  You just want to find an audience for your words.  I understand and accept that.  I will no longer read your posts.

A smarter man would have come to this realization sooner. What bothers me is that the gibberish that you post tends to take any reasonable discussion off of the rails, thus harming this community.

Why don't you and WolverSwede go to his "Read Me" post and spout off to each other?  Unless WolverSwede is your third or fourth pen name.

If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that's left is compromise.

not my quote. since youre smart and I am not....how do you define reasonable in a chat room? Chat room reason or lack thereof. Be a great paper. that quote above goes hand in hand with the logic of an engineer.

OK, I totally posted a forum entitled "Quit 'Yer Bitchin"...

http://www.mgoblog.com/content/quit-yer-bitchin

But, man, your posts are horrid.  Just please, please stop.  Have you ever heard of a paragraph?  How about an opening, body and conclusion to a rational thought?  I mean, it's all gibberish.  Are you hammered all the time?  Holy hell...it's just not readable.  I didn't read it.  I never do.  It's just a jumble of thoughts brewed up by an insane person.

I hereby take back my "Quit 'Yer Bitchin" forum.  Because, the only reasonable way you can respond to this mess is with a bitch.

what do you get out of a chat room about Michigan Football? at the end of the day.....what do you get out of it? how old are you by the way? and whats worse....... a perfect paragraph, dotted i's....crossed t's.....that says nothing and lacks depth. Or in imperfect paragraph that says something? Out of those two what is worse? And don't think I am associating my rant with depth. Whats your answer

When I got up this morning and checked the blog, there must have been 20 new posts/diaries/threads.  I noticed that one of them was by Ellipses man, and saved reading that one for last because I knew that it would be, well, this.

E-man, I do not doubt that you have something to contribute to the blog.  That is why I am taking the trouble to write this.  But your writing style is undisciplined.  You don't take the effort to use proper punctuation, CAPITALIZATION, paragraphs, etc.

I think you are a fan of Bo's.  Think of these things as fundamentals.  If you don't do the fundamentals well you will not succeed.  Undisciplined writing leads to undisciplined thoughts and posts.  If even you do not think it worth the effort to present your arguments in a proper form, why should anyone take your posts seriously?

You are trying to "sell" your ideas and thoughts on this board.  And like a consumer product, packaging is an important part of the sale.  Poor packaging often reflects a faulty product.

Your grammar and writing style are undisciplined, and so are your arguments.  You would be much more effective if you addressed these.

Look gentlemen, not only are we all Michigan fans here, but we are all upset after today.  The game didn't go well and that is acceptable and it will spawn complaining.  Once we start attacking people who are posting their opinions (im talking to you mjvancam), that will be the moment where this site turns from a happy place to discuss our favorite team with like minded individuals into a forum filled with petty bickering and name calling.  If you don't agree with a point, make your case in a logical manner and wait for a response.  If you just jump down the throat of all the posters here, it will be a slippery slope towards mayhem.

I did read what E-man said. Here is my impression:

1. McGuffie "has no attitude", is "no thrills no frills", and is "just a man". You don't know him, I imagine, or have met him. There hasn't ever even been a filmed interview of the kid. We have no idea what sort of person he is. Additionally, the sort of person he is has no impact on what sort of running back he is. In the end, saying a guy is "just a worker", or "has no attitude" is, ultimately, code for "he's white". Why can't you say what we do know? He played a great fucking game. Period. All the inside-his-mind stuff is useless.

2.Why do you think someone like Shaw is suffering from something related to not having his ego stroked? How do a) even know that's true and b) know it's what he's thinking?

3. The fumbles were likely not a function of the player's ego. They were likely a function of playing a football game in a fucking typhoon. If you've never heard of Occam's Razor, it states, simply "All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best." So, what's simpler? Shaw and Grady are jealous of McGuffie, and Cissoko needs his ego stroked, so that psychosomatically worked into their hands to weaken their grip; or, "it was really wet outside, and most of these people don't have much experience"?

4. Finally, here's why some of us prefer some sort of reason, and evidence behind posts: because then they help us understand things, or bring an interesting point of view to the table. Hearing observations such as "we ran the ball much better vs. Miami because of Molk's improved play" is MUCH more enlightening than "I believe that right now, Michael Shaw is thinking ______". Because one exists in reality, and the other exists in the head of the author.
