French Open Update: Sock Falls in 5

Submitted by uncle leo on

Started to get really, really frustrated with this dude. Loses to a guy that had to qualify as a lucky loser.

Mahut v Del Potro in the 3rd, split the first 2 sets.

Other American men:

Steve Johnson- 2nd round (will play JL Struff)

Isner- 2nd round (will play Zeballos)

Donaldson- 2nd round (will play Dimitrov)

Querrey- 2nd round (will play Simon)

That's it. That's all we got left for USA Men at the French.

That's (1) a typical Detroit Lions record, and (2) Sock's record thus far in Singles in Calendar Year 2018.

He is what he is.  A very good doubles player but I've given up on him in Singles in terms of being "the great American tennis hope."

But his attitude when I watch him just sucks. He just doesn't seem to have that drive that is necessary. Same with Querrey. He's openly said he cares more about the money than being remembered as a great tennis player.

Hate to say it but Idk if we'll ever see another great American tennis player on the men's side. There are significant barriers to entry and most talented athletes gravitate towards other sports. Not that it wasn't before, but it's become too much of a country club sport here in the last 20ish years.

American men just struggle so much on clay. Oh well. Still exciting to watch this tourney and see if Rafa can keep making history. Side note, I'm heading to Wimbledon this year and cannot wait. This will be major #3 of 4 and I still need to get to Roland Garros.

...And even though he lost, he is not exactly playing sliced bread out there.

Professional tennis is relatively even competition-wise, especially the men, and the margins are razor thin. Sock was never going to be a top 5 player IMO.
