Per ESPN Analytics, Chase Winovich is killing it in the NFL
The link is pay-walled and includes a summary of multiple players in the NFL that are on the verge of breakouts. I hope I'm not breaking some kind of rule by posting a pay-walled link here.
The section about Chase states that while he doesn't qualify for most of their metrics (he only plays about 66 percent of defensive snaps) his pass rush and run stop win rates on the edge would be top 10 in the NFL if he did qualify. They created a plot of edge rushers and Winovich resides in the "good quadrant" (top right quadrant with a high pass rush win rate and run stop win rate combined) surrounded by players like Khalil Mack, Brandon Graham (wow still killing it at his age), Joey Bosa, and JJ Watt.
For us Lions fans, only one player on the team makes the plot and its Romeo Okwara. He slots in on the far left side of the plot with a pretty low run stop rate and an average pass rush win rate compared to the rest of the list.
The other players listed in the article include: Quinnen Williams DT NYJ (top 5 pick duh), Mekhi Bection OT NYJ (damn you Drevno lol), Brian Burns DE Carolina, Andy Janovich FB Cleveland, Tyson Alualu NT Pittsburgh (33 years old), and Erik McCoy C New Orleans.

Love to see that LB->TE->Wildman find himself in the league. Not quite Duncan, but still a great story.

Here is the tweet with the edge rushing plot I talked about. You can see him in the top right quadrant. TJ Watt is a monster at pass rushing apparently. lol
Frank Clark also makes it onto the plot in the bottom left quadrant with one of the lowest win rates in both stopping the run and rushing the passer.

Not surprised. Chase has a finely tuned turbocharged motor that knows not the word "stop".

And I ignorantly thought it was Rashan Gary’s play that allowed Chase to be the player he was. Looks like it might have been the other way round.

These lists just reinforce how bad a GM Quinn is. How am I better at spotting talent when I'm just a keyboard GM watching youtube videos in my spare time.
When we got to our 2nd round pick last year, 3 guys I had targeted were Winovich, McCoy and Metcalf. WTF Tavai?

Bob Quinn is a fool.

He has been lion-ized! Thank you ford family for 60+ years of extremely profitable futility!

The Lions GM and coach are absolutely pathetic and I cannot wait till they are gone
However, trying to connect Chase Winovich and Bob Quinn is way off base. He was taken in the middle of the third round- you could essentially blast every GM for passing up on him in the 2nd or 3rd.
I could get after half the GMs in basketball for passing up on Giannis, but that's silly.
The problem is not who they are drafting. It's the fact they the organization cannot make players better.
October 9th, 2020 at 11:11 PM ^
Keep in mind that some mocks had Chase as high as late 1st round.
But my point wasn't only that Quinn isn't very good at his job because he passed on Winovich. It was that he isn't very good at his job because he wasn't able to identify a quality player to draft when I was able to identify three. Guy on his computer should not be the measuring stick for these GMs getting paid millions.

Since the Lions over reached for Tavai I have made a point to isolate him when he is in the game. The guy is as slow as molasses in January and he couldn't cover my grandmother. The Patriots got the best of Quinn making him think they were going to go after what should have been a 7th rounder with their pick in the 2nd round. Quinn took the bait wanting to prove he was the smartest guy in the room. He basically wasted his 2nd round pick on a guy that on his best day should be a special teams player. That in a nutshell tells you all you need to know about this lousy organization.

I am not arguing about that- it was a terrible pick.
But getting after him about Winovich when the NFL passed him up 2 and a half times is dumb.
October 9th, 2020 at 5:36 PM ^
Surprised to see Frank Clark so low. Don't watch much NFL but I was under the impression he was pretty good. Making $20 million a year, this chart would imply he's way overpaid.
October 9th, 2020 at 5:48 PM ^
Clark seems to be hurt all the time. Dude got paid and the chiefs would do it again. He was very important in their super bowl run. I think he had 4 sacks in the 3 games.
October 9th, 2020 at 5:55 PM ^
Permitting he stays healthy, Winovich is going to make himself a fine chunk of change when it comes time to sign that second contract in a couple of years.
He's certainly proving that his success here was not solely because Rashan Gary commanded double teams on the other side of the line.

And to think, he does it all for 5 dollars and a chocolate bar.

One of those players with a great name, both a noun and an active verb. Chase!

Don’t know what this means and am asking from a place of honesty and humility

CMIII was/is a highly regarded pro linebacker and pass rusher. He was notable for his long stringy hair flowing out of his helmet. He seemed to be a role model for Winovich.

Thank you!

Kevin Greene?

I made the comparison below I actually see him more of a Mike Vrabel comp. All American DE who was considered a ‘tweener and ended up with a pro bowl caliber career as a semi off the line edge player in the pros.

I miss Chase, last guy who really seemed to get it all. It’s a damn shame he could never beat osu.
October 9th, 2020 at 9:35 PM ^
IStill don’t get why the NFL didn’t think he was going to be this good, keeps proving people wrong. 3rd round steal.
October 10th, 2020 at 4:24 AM ^
Probably the same reason many UM fans thought he was only good because of Rashan Gary...he’s underrated And doesn’t fit the mold
October 10th, 2020 at 9:47 AM ^
Doesn’t fit the mold like Mike Vrabel back in the day, almost the same track to the league. I’ll say this: chase had somewhat skinny lower half but this season he’s put on must be 10 pounds mostly in his lower half got to be up to 260-265, and the weight room work definitely shows ask Carlos Hyde.

Per me, Michigan’s problue movement is dominating the NFL
October 9th, 2020 at 10:29 PM ^
Patriots seem to be doing really well by grabbing under valued UM alumni. (Brady, Onwenu, Winovich)
October 10th, 2020 at 9:21 AM ^
Lets see how Uche does when he gets off IR. Might be another year before we see him dominate the way Chase is doing right now though.
October 10th, 2020 at 11:52 AM ^
Bill like Michigan defenders. He threw out Don Browns name and gave a thumbs up to Jin when that shithead Durkin left. The Brady story goes that they wanted another arm to compete with Michael Bishop for a developmental passer and were down to TB and Tim Rattay the consensus in the “war room” was Rattay but it was the QB coach Sick Reihbein who really liked Brady voting how he was kind of handcuffed with the 2 QB thing Carr was doing but Brady always seemed to be put in when the shit was hitting the fan, then the Alabama orange bowl and the 400yards.
October 9th, 2020 at 10:34 PM ^
Ah, that Chase/Uche defense was so much fun to watch and now they're reunited.
Too bad the Patriots are evil.
