Depth Chart by Class
I've been tinkering around with the depth chart by class. Putting all LBs together really isn't good enough for my liking, so I have broken it down into WILL, MIKE, and SAM considering that they are different positions. I used Magnus's blog as the guide for this. Some of the positioning might be wrong on my part. Also, for some reason the formatting is double spacing some of the players and I'm not sure why. So anyone who wants to upgrade this chart even further, have at it. Let's make this thing look as good as possible. It makes following recruiting way easier for me.

the wiki link chart under the useful things tab. I was basically asking people to make changes as they saw fit to the MGoBlog chart (i.e. if I put a guy at MLB when he's actually playing SLB in practice)
I'd say it's too hard to lump them into one position because even though they're playing one they all probably have to know all three positions, or at least two, for depth purposes.
Also, I forgot to move Campbell to DL and Vinopal off the list.
but we had our offensive line broken into guards, tackles, and centers even though they can shift around. In general, Kenny Demens is a MIKE. That's what I'm getting at here.
a number of errors.
yes, I know it's from Feb. He replied before I could edit.
Miller will be a soph (and most probabaly Devin as well). Vinopal is gone and Christian plus Williamson to follow shortly.
junior Hemmingway? Molk?

That's the chart I'm referring to
Not to mention Koger, T-Wolf and Big Will.
FYI: Magnus answered this question in the Joe Bolden thread, but he think Ringer will be at WILL instead of MIKE.
BTW: Thanks for updating the chart.
No offense, ken725, but I want to make this clear:
I don't *think* that Ringer is going to be a WILL. Ringer said so himself. Now there's always the possibility that things change down the road, he hits a growth spurt, etc. But people keep saying that he looks like a MIKE, and that's fine...
...but if the coaches tell him he's going to be a WILL, that's really all we need to know. I'm not being obstinate on this topic just because I'm hard-headed (which I am). It's just that I'm trying to be factual.
I didn't mean to throw your name around. I should have said you reported that the coaches want him at WILL. And being factual is always appreciated.
I realize they are very distinct positions on the field but I generally preferred Brian's original categorization that lumped LBs and DTs together. I could see splitting out the OLB and ILB perhaps, but theres going to be some overlap at most of these spots.
I'd like to see more aggregation, not less, as we can't expect to be accurate. I think splitting out slots is pretty silly at this point - people like Roundtree and Odoms can clearly do both. I also wouldn't mind seeing the safeties combined, and the RBs and FBs combined as well (since theres been some rumblings of split-back sets and people like Hopkins being used as part-time FBs).
I think the 'unofficial 2-deep' should have detailed positions, but the point of the 'depth chart by class' isn't to try to extrapolate a 2-deep out 4 years from now. It seems a little silly to pretend we can assign detailed positions to incoming freshman -- in fall of 2012 -- and expect that to have any sort of reliability. Some of these people are nearly 16 years old and will be 21 when they actually start at Michigan. Better to just admit we don't know and say a guy is in the mix at a certain position group. Some guys we can project, but others are a long way off. e.g. Brandon Graham came in as a LB, switched to DT, and ended up at DE. Assigning him to WILL or SAM or whatever would have been kinda silly.
I guess I'd say a position group is a big enough challenge when talking about freshman and recruits.
I think more of the walk-ons should be on the depth chart. Guys like Mattias, Gunderon and Yerden should show up at OT since that's a spot that we're very low on depth and those guys might see the field, and Sayed since he's pretty good and we don't have a ton of receivers, especially after this year and especially if guys like Williamson, Robinson and Gallon aren't on the team next year (pure speculation on Gallon).
Maybe it should be a rule that all preferred walk-ons be put on the chart.
Hopefully, we won't have to take too many names off of this before fall.
