David Molk tidbit

From this morning's 1360AM (local San Diego sports radio) football hour with Nick Hardwick, former host and Charger/Boilermaker center.  They were asking Nick about this time of year during NFL roster cut-downs.  He mentioned that personally he would share as much info/knowledge with guys trying to make the team, rather than trying to protect his spot on the roster.  But then mentioned something to the effect of, except David Molk who wouldn't listen to anyone, including coaches, and only did things his way.

Molk was one of my favorite personalities during his time at UM and I loved how he reinserted himself in the 2012 Sugar Bowl when it was clear his back-up wasn't cutting it.  I had high hopes for him in the NFL but he didn't last long and I believe he published a book anonymously about how he hated football.

In a large picture sense....Successful Sales is more than technical knowledge.  You have to have a certain knack with people to get them to see things your way.  Influence them.  Its a subtle art which I happen to be very good at it.  You also have to be pretty immune to rejection and understand that its all part of the dance.

That said, I recently took a very technical sales job in a new industry and its my lack of industry technical knowledge that is holding me back.  You have to know what you are selling and convey value or no one buys from you.

So Molk better crack open a book or pdf white paper and get studying, like I am on a Friday night.

"I just like to hit people. . .. really, REALLY, hard. . . "

He went through a lot as a kid (Mom dying of cancer, etc.)  I was hoping he would have the chops to be a coach one day.  But after one of his press conferences, the media would probably try to eviscerate him.

Couldn't care less whether Molk listened to anyone in the NFL. Liked him when he was here. Respect him for writing the book and having the cajones to do it while he was still playing and probably knowing it wouldn't stay anonymous.

Hmm...

Let's be clear... Molk was a monster talent with a stellar legacy of play and awards.  I'm proud of that record - speaking as a fan/alumnus.

Here comes the but...

I prefer it when back-ups succeed.   When they don't there's a reason.

I applaud Molk's Sugar Bowl effort... but fault him for his mentorship.

This link says it all to me.  I liked the attitude  of Rocko and Miller (who lost his dad as a kid - and had a character that was beyond great - speaking as a fan. )  Read this link... matching OPs take... Molk was not a great unit leader (just saying...it's clear when you read his book and follow the limited stories out there...)

Here's another...

This was well after concussion gate.

If you want an opinion ask Miller (why did he leave early again?), Khoury (wait... why did he leave early?) or read Molk's book (for a stunning lack of introspection.) Where there is smoke...

We talked about the book when it came out several times...
