Daily column about Spike

Submitted by PeteM on

I know that this board hasn't been exactly lacking for Spike posts over the last few days, but I stumbled across this column over the weekend (more precisely, while watching the Delaware State game with Spike' sadly, at the end of the bench in street clothes).  Anyway, the piece has some interesting detail about Spike's relationship with his grandfather and his commitment to school -- I know I'd have missed a few group meetings during the final four run.  It confirms the sense I've had of him from passing intereactions at the banquets and watching him play, and is worth a read:

Or he could go work at Priority Sports Management for Josh Bartelstein's dad. They had a posting on UM Law's job board for an agent spot there a few years back. Was sorely tempted to apply.

“I think that I showed people you can’t ever let someone tell you what you can or can’t do. You know, my whole life I was told I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t big enough, I wasn’t strong enough, fast enough — things like that. But I never really let that faze me. And I always just tried to go out there and prove people wrong.”

In so many ways, mission accomplished - Spike did those things that few people seemed to think were in his future. Even better, he did them so well and did them with such class that hopefully the only thing coming from his detractors now is stunned silence.

"How does a kid from Coos Bay, with one leg longer than the other win races? All my life people have been telling me, 'You're too small Pre', 'You're not fast enough Pre', 'Give up your foolish dream Steve'. But they forgot something, I HAVE TO WIN."

watching this young man play. He didn't play for an NBA contract, he didn't showboat, he played because he loved two things 1. The game, 2. Michigan. Never saw him give less than a 100%, and he was always undersized against everyone he played. I hope great things for Spike in the future.
