Crystal Balls Coming in for 2025 DL Bobby Kanka

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on November 2nd, 2022 at 10:47 PM

Steve Lorenz and Allen Trieu put in crystal balls this week for 2025 DL Bobby Kanka, a 6-4, 255-pound sophomore from Howell. He played last season at Pinckney, where he was teammates with current freshman PWO Charlie Lovell.

Kanka was at the MSU game and the crytal balls came in after that, so he obviously liked what he saw on those fourth-down stops.

There are no 2025 stars yet, but it sounds like he'll have a bunch of them. He already has offers from Tennessee and Syracuse and some others. His dad Tom was an All-American at Hillsdale College.

I could be wrong here (at least in the 2023 recruiting class) but I have a feeling we are going to start having some improvement in recruiting. We have had a very solid season so far and I believe there will be a strong finish with this years recruiting because players are going to realize Harbaugh is here to stay. With how consistent our Defense anD Offense have been the last couple of years, I think we are going to start getting some steady top tier talent looking at us. I believe recruiting is about to get elite for 2024 and beyond. Harbaugh has built a great culture and coaching staff to build on it and it’s been a while since our program has had as much confidence as we have right now. Go Blue!

Your optimism reminds of the old (and verifiably true) adage about soldiers going into battle. They generally expect that they will survive while knowing that others won't- that luck will be with them.  Meanwhile, here in reality, "luck" is a gaussian curve that favors no man under equal circumstances. So, while I hope you're right, I'm not sure how valuable your intuition is.

Hillsdale 2010 alum here (username does not check out), son of an '84 Hillsdale Alum.  Although my mom has sadly passed she did know Tom and former Northwood coach Pat Riepma (whom also passed away far too young) from her time at the college.  She always spoke highly of both and I can't imagine Tom's son would be anything less than a high character individual Michigan would love to have.

Also to note: Tom never played in a regular season NFL game.  Only 6 Hillsdale alums have ever "played" in the NFL, and ironically I went to college with two of them:

  • Jared Veldheer (3rd round pick in 2010 and had a recent feature on NFL films: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sJEiWpErr8)
  • Andre Holmes
  • Chester Marcol (1972 rookie of the year, 1972 and 1974 all pro and is the only true kicker in NFL history to score a touchdown in an overtime period https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA2fHoUkG2g&t=78s)
  • Bruce McLenna
  • Nate Johnson
  • Howard Mudd (a member of 1960's all decade team but probably more known for being on the Colts staff while Manning was there as the O-Line coach)

Another Hillsdale alum, '89-93, Tom was my coach for a year there and he was a BEAST, I'll never forget him in the weight room, he had 405 lbs on the bench and did probably 6-8 reps with his feet up on the bench like it was nothing.  He was a good guy, had some funny stories from his time in Pittsburgh, good coach too, it helped that he played the position he was coaching.  If his son has the same drive and toughness that'll be a great pickup for the good guys.

This is pretty neat, being from Howell myself. The only D1 football player from there that I can recall is Pete Cender, who played a year or two at Air Force before transferring to Grand Valley.
