College Hockey NCAAT - Quinnipiac vs OSU Sunday Open Thread

Submitted by I Bleed Maize N Blue on March 26th, 2023 at 2:51 PM

The game before our game. Qpac only won their opener by 5 goals. The most they've given up is 5, back in October @ NoDak, 5-5. They haven't given up 3 or 4 since January. Worst losses have been 4-0 @ Maine in Oct and 4-0 @ Cornell in Jan. Also 2-1 in 2OT to Colgate, though we thank them for very much for that.

Can the Bobcats crush the Buckeyes? Or will the Buckeyes come down on them like a ton of poisonous nuts?

4 PM ET, ESPN2

U-M vs PSU, 6:30 PM, ESPN2

Our game thread will be up later, though there's some U-M stuff I'll post here.

I hope Quinnipiac can win. If we beat Penn State we’re playing this game’s winner and while we got the better of OSU most recently, we’ve really struggled with them this year and they look dangerous right now after killing Harvard

I expect OSU to treat Quinnipiac how we did last year. Q is probably a paper tiger. I’ll bet OSU 4-2 unfortunately

Kinda remarkable how much success for Michigan teams in the last 8ish years has tracked with online calls for firings. Beilein? Went to the championship game and won two conference tourneys. Bakich? Game 3 of the national championship series. Barnes-Arico? Most successful women’s basketball teams in school history by some margin.

And then there’s Harbaugh.

Kinda wish someone had vented about one of those bad defensive games with a firing call thread. As it stands, Michigan basketball probably needs a good “fire Juwan” month to get over the hump.

Quinnipiac has a shiny record which is validated somewhat by #2 rankings in KRACH and PWR (RPI). They should win this game most of the time. Obviously the Big Ten is good at the top but maybe we shouldn't overreact to the Round 1 blowouts. Hockey predictions are stupid but I imagine this will be a low scoring, low-event game where I think QPac has the advantage.

This is the unusual review goal where the regular tv camera is the best angle.

Team in yellow giving up a breakaway. Hope this is the only game where that happens.

I can't watch this game. I really can't cheer for anyone.

I want to win the national championship and I don't care how we get there. I want the easiest possible road and I really don't know which of those teams is better. Quinnipiac plays in a vastly inferior conference, but basically never loses. We beat them last year but I'm not super familiar with them. They are a #1 seed. Ohio is well...Ohio and I just can't fathom a reason why I would ever cheer for them in any situation or circumstance.

So I guess I'm hoping they play 500 overtimes and the game doesn't end until 4/5.

This game just sucks.

I think Ohio is the worse team and therefore the team we're more likely to beat, but I can't cheer for them. I guess I hope Quinnipiac wins but several of their star players wake up tomorrow and decide they hate hockey and don't want to do this anymore.

That's very true.

The thing with the Ohio games is we've just been a weird team lately. I think getting bored was a problem for us last year and has been even worse this year.

I think we should beat either of these teams (not to say we'd be massive favorites against either). Both of these teams have aspects about them that scare me. I'm also not the type of person that wants to beat 3 number 1 seeds and the top #2 seed to win the title. I would be perfectly content with beating  #16 and #15 in the frozen 4 while also beating #14 and a #3 seed in our regional.

Michigan has won plenty of titles - does anyone remember or care about the patch we took in the tourney to win them?

The ones I was alive for? Sure. 96 included the Mike Legg goal. 98 was the first home regional, coming back from 2-0 down (plus a 5-on-3 PK) against favored North Dakota.

But I get what you mean. The game before the Nodak win Michigan barely squeaked by Princeton. Nobody cares that it wasn’t pretty.

Best path is just a hope. Sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn’t. When Michigan made the final in bball against Villanova, they were helped by a favorable side of the bracket. On the other hand, hockey got basically the worst possible path in 2011, made the final anyway… and lost to a one-line team that only narrowly made the tournament in the final.
