Cleveland Indians officially change their name to the Cleveland Guardians
I get getting rid of Wahoo, but otherwise, I just have to ask when this is going to end? When do Nordic descendants decide the Vikings are offensive? When does PETA decide that the Lions and Tigers are offensive and animal exploitation?
That last example might be a bit extreme, but my original point still stands. When does this end?
Why should it end? Sports teams change their names from time to time for various reasons, but often because a particular name (or mascot, etc.) no longer resonates the way it once did. If a significant number of a team's fans find the mascot/name offensive or divisive, why not make a change? It doesn't mean one side necessarily is right or wrong, it just means it's time to move on.
I would have gone with something like "Maharajas."
Still think they should have picked "Redskins" for the new name.
I’m a diehard Tribe fan and this is about as bad as it gets. Seeing the name and the logo makes me think of the opening of Baseketball. Not one person in this city wanted that name and yet, the Dolan family continues to show why they are at the shallowest end of the gene pool.
