The One and Only U of M student (and athlete to boot) to become a Rhodes Scholar this year. Way to go!

DISTRICT 11 Michigan David S. Moore, Holland, received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan in May, and remains there for his master’s in Mechanical Engineering. He won the top award in engineering both his junior and senior years. In his design and manufacturing work and courses he has created a mechanism that allows wheelchair users to more easily use a backpack, and developed a new needle biopsy device. He was captain of the Michigan Men’s Varsity Swim Team, a team that won the 2013 National Championship and four Big Ten Championships. He was also the community service chair for the Student Athlete Advisory Council, and organized the Swim Team’s community service activities. At Oxford, David plans to do the M.Sc. in Computer Science followed by the M.B.A.

Without looking through this year's winners, I'd guess that most are athletes of some kind. Being involved in sports is one of the primary components of a successful Rhodes' application.

Involvement in sports might be helpful, but it doesn't appear to be "one of the primary components of a successful Rhodes' application."  For those of us who remember watching Bill Bradley play for Princeton, it might be easy to think that sports counts a lot; but when it comes to awarding to those scholarships, it seems like there have been more people like Bill Clinton, journalists E. J. Dionne and Nicholas Kristof, ABC-TV's George Stephanopolous, and MSNBC-TV hosts Rachel Maddow and Ronan Farrow than USC quarterback Pat Haden, Stanford receiver Cory Booker, Florida State defensive back Myron Rolle and Michigan swimmer David Moore.

Here’s the LINK to the list of American Rhodes Scholars for 2015.  Of the 32 on the list, only the eight listed below are varsity athletes. Athletes or not, they've all got very impessive qualifications.

Matthew Townsend - Yale Basketball
Ridwan Y. Hassen - Dartmouth Endurance Racing
Alexander Coccia - Notre Dame Fencing
Rebecca Esselstein - Air Force Track and Cross Country
David S. Moore - Michigan Swimming
Tayo O. Sanders II - Wisconsin-Eau Claire Triathlon
Elliot H. Akama-Garren - M. I. T. Ice Hockey
Rachel Skokowski - Princeton - Track and Cross Country

I went to high school with David and was a close friend for a few years. He is the most deserving person for this award. He was always one of the smartest minds i knew, but he was not at all conceited about it, almost to the point where people didn't realize how smart he actually was. This is an awesome award and he will do amazing things!
