CBs for 3* OL Nathan Efobi to Michigan

All quiet on the recruiting front as of late, but good news out of the weekend as it looks like UM now leads for 3* OL Nathan Efobi out of GA. He’s 6’3 - 6’4 and listed at roughly 280, ranked 454 in the composite: https://247sports.com/player/nathan-efobi-46114982/

EJ Holland and Zach Libby have called their respective picks at On3 and Rivals, and it looks like Brice is putting in a Crystal Ball at 247 (paywall). Would be a good pickup after whiffing on Paul Mubenga earlier this summer, and generally starting very slowly with our OL recruiting. Ideally we want 5 linemen in the class, and right now we have just Herring and Link committed. Efobi projects as a guard, but it should be noted that some recruitniks have been evaluating him at DT.

I just browsed his profile at 24/7. He has an unusual offer sheet. Georgia (yes, that Georgia) offered first in March 2021. Since then, he's gotten a smattering of mid- or bottom-tier ACC and SEC offers, as well as some G5 offers. But in March 2022, he picked up a PSU offer, followed by July 2022 Michigan offer. My guess is that he only has an "offer" from Georgia. I'd like to see the history of his recruiting ranking and see if that clarifies whether he's a generic three star or a promising late riser.

FWIW I believe On3 has him in their top 150-200 range.

Side note - I was checking the 247 composite for remaining OT options and noticed a LOT of the “5-star” OL from early in the cycle have dropped to the 50-75 range - i.e. the OT we lost to ND (Jagusah?), an IOL that signed with PSU and several kids that MSU has or will end  up missing on.

Very few OL at the top - not sure if it is a weak class or maybe the services admitting that OL prospects are much more of a crap-shoot than other positions.

I did some more digging. 24/7 does have a ranking history, but it's not very helpful. You can see how a recruit's composite rating changes over time, but not its effect on the relative rating. Until June 2022, Efobi's rating showed a pretty consistent trend upwards. It fell in June, July, and September 2022. My guess is that Efobi did not camp this summer, so his evaluation stayed static as scouts moved around prospects that made their way to camps. If the climb resumes as high school games resume and scouts get current game tape, I think he might end up being an underrated late riser.

After watching his film and the OL film of every commit we’ve had for the last 20 years, it looks like he’s got some exceptional athleticism.

He’s definitely raw and has too high a pad level on a lot of plays. Definitely needs a college weight room.  Don’t expect him to contribute early but he could be a real asset as an upper class man.  I’d feel a lot better about him in this class if we had some nice building blocks with him, so he wouldn’t be needed for 3-4 years.

The time seems right to begin poaching ND and MSU recruits who we may have missed out on previously. With our secondary rivals slide into irrelevance this season, we may be able to persuade a couple of guys to our favor.

This is what I've been waiting for.  Happened last year I believe too, as we started racking up wins.  Time to erode that Sparty class and take a flip or two from Notre Dame now that the shine is off their new coach.  Florida and Miami strike me as two other teams with likely good 'croots that might start looking elsewhere soon

Scares the bejeezus out of me hearing that we need 5 lineman, that we missed on prospects and that it is potentially a weak class (from comments above).  Our line sucked for so long.  Remember when Mason Cole was our only offensive lineman?  It felt like Warriner fixed all of our problems, and he's gone.  In reality it was probably a little bit of the guy before him and Moore last year as well, but we can't go back to the Cole days.  I want whatever award we won last year for best O-line every year.

Hopefully we laynd Efobi.
