Carlos Brown's Future

Submitted by Hard Gay on

What are everyone's thoughts on Carlos Brown?

I think he would have been a very useful asset to have.  I think he would have been really effective, and if he showed the same amount of improvement from last year as Brandon Minor did, he could easily be one of the best backs in the Big Ten.  What do you think will happen to him next year?  Will he be buried in the depth chart?  It would be a shame, that kid is brimming with potential.

Also, can he get a medical redshirt for this year?

He probably couldn't get a medical redshirt, but he could get a regular redshirt.  He's only played on 2 games, I think.  Medical redshirts require extenuating physical injuries, like a torn ACL or a broken leg or something.  You can't get one for having a few nagging injuries.

I have nothing to base this on, but I think Brown will transfer in the offseason.  I think he's the odd man out, and he probably realizes that he's not going to get any carries here.

He cannot get a regular redshirt.  Playing even one down eliminates the possibility of redshirting.

He may be eligible for a medical redshirt, though:

Medical Hardship Waiver
If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of
competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which
would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify
for a medical hardship:
• The student-athlete’s injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate
competition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institution or occur subsequent to the first day of
classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school;
• The injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that
concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests
or dates of competition) and result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season;
and
• The injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two
contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 20 percent (whichever
number is greater) of the institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or
her sport.
Student-athletes should note that medical hardship waivers are not automatic and, therefore, the studentathlete
should consult with his/her head coach along with the Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic
Director for Compliance Services.

He'll have to apply for one and if they determine that whatever injuries he has sustained this season were enough to keep him out of games for the second half of the season, I don't see why it won't be granted.  I've never been under the impression that medical redshirts are only granted for major injuries.  I believe that is only the case if you have burned your redshirt previously and are looking for a sixth year of eligibility.  Nagging injuries that keep someone below 100% and out of action are fine in Carlos' case, AFAIK.

Not for regular redshirts:

 You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.
