MLB and safety are two most vocal positions on defense: one calls out the front seven adjustments, one aligns the secondary. Considering position, I’m not surprised when one also understands that Bush is an All American who plays like Ray Lewis and Kinnell is the sanguine old man of the secondary.

I mean, we can theoretically have quite a few of these threads, but then, say, if a good 20%-25% of the team is a named captain, how important is the position really?

Your calculus is off: this is about being captains for the complete team; not just for the starters or for on the field play calls.
