Brian Kelly

Submitted by Electron Erectshon on
Now that the UM offseason is officially upon us I'm struggling with how to dedicate my typical 50 hours/week to this blog. I’m starting to see some chat about Brian Kelly to ND. Just for the heck of it, turn back the clock to the coaching search days. Assume any one of the coaches below was in play for the job. (I realize RR wasn’t even on people’s radar screens but just pretend). IMO, these were the top 6 available from the CF ranks and I had no interest in an NFL retread. I think all 6 of them are great football coaches. So how would you or did you rank them back then? Rich Rodriguez Paul Johnson Jim Grobe Brian Kelly Les Miles Chris Petersen Of course this exercise is for nothing so just ignore if you’d rather discuss more relevant / real topics. Now that we have more of an identity, I’m just curious to see how posters on this blog saw things. Myself, 1. Brian Kelly 2. Les Miles 3. Chris Petersen 4. Rich Rodriguez 5. Paul Johnson 6. Jim Grobe Wow, great game between GA & GA Tech eh?

I was banging the drum for Brian Kelly. My list would have probably been something like this: 1) Brian Kelly 2) Rich Rodriguez 3) Les Miles 4) Chris Petersen 5) Paul Johnson 6) Jim Grobe I was originally high on Chris Petersen, but then I realized that he'd only been the head coach at Boise for a short time at that point.

Let me preface the following. All of it, pure speculation. Possible reasons he didn't get the job: BK’s image issues. The gist of the bum rap he received during the CMU murder investigation was that he instructed his players not to comment to the police w/o legal representation. His explanation included a questionably (racially) insensitive explanation that involved African Americans being targeted by cops. IMO, BK is just a smart guy who leans left and broke it down for folks - i.e. to paraphrase BK, generally speaking African Americans have a rougher go of things, don't get all the tools to break the vicious socioeconomic cycle they're born into, etc. UM’s cronyism: In addition to the PR concerns, my guess (pure speculation) that LC received some inside info from Debord that he passed on to BM and this cronyism hurt BK's chances as well. BK’s ego: I once talked to a guy who played for him at CMU who said he could be an arrogant prick at times but a great coach who knew how to win. I hope there are more reasons because none of these should have prevented him from being considered IMO. If other elite programs from the midwest pass on BK then l'll believe the skeletons in the closet and reasons were deeper than I'm privy to and accept that BM was not wrong to give him a look. However, If ND hires him (and I think they will) and consistently beats UM then the hell with BM's reasons, IMO. Here are reasons why BK is the best coaching prospect in CF: 1. Wins championships everywhere he goes (GVSU, CMU and now Cinci) 2. Articulate / represents his school well 3. Doesn't blow his lid during games 4. Wins championships everywhere he goes. Looking on the bright side he's developing a Fulmer belly and I'm sick of looking at fat people.

I remember one skeleton that didn't stop him from getting the Cinncy job. What other skeletons? As to the topic, RR was my hope from the beginning of the retirement talk - couldn't understand why his named popped up so late. I don't think Kelly was ready for UM last year. I'd like to see him stay where he is for at least one more year. Besides, with the way ND burns through coaches, I'm not sure that its one of the top coaching jobs in CF anymore.

In all honesty though, did anyone really think it was a possibility that RR would come? I mean, I know you could've taken the Alabama mingling as a sign that he was uncomfortable at WVU, but I took it as a sign that he was sticking to his alma mater and that he was able to resist the temptation of one of the biggest jobs in football. With that in mind my list would've been: Pete Carroll Resurrected Bo Urban Meyer RichRod Miles Kelly Laugh if you want, but I think RichRod is the best pick up we could've asked for. And doxa, no coach will make us forget about Bo, but Rodriguez-Tressel will be the next Bo-Woody. Let's just see if Tressel ends up punching a kid.

when he was at WVU, it was so fun watching Pat White and him running that offense. so i was excited that he is our coach now bc next year and 2010 will be fun to watch. better than this.
