Basketball (men's and women's) Early Signing Period News

Submitted by Raoul on

Yesterday was the first day of the early signing period, and Carlton Brundidge and Trey Burke are expected to sign their LOIs today. Rothstein at annarbor.com got a quote from Burke:

Trey Burke turns 18 years old Friday. On his last day as a minor, he’ll complete one of the biggest decisions of his life.

...

“I’m real glad. It was a stressful process, came down between Michigan and Cincinnati, and it was one of the hardest decisions I ever made in my life,” Burke said Wednesday.

“But at the end of the day, Michigan was just the best choice for me and I’m glad I’m signing and getting it over with.”

EDIT: Michigan has now received Burke's LOI and issued a press release about him. Here's an excerpt:

"In Trey Burke we are adding a proven winner and floor general to our basketball program," said Beilein. "He combines a competitive spirit, quickness and poise on the court to provide leadership, and his skill set allows him to impact the game as a passer, a scorer and a shooter."

Brundidge hasn't signed his LOI yet, but he's just waiting for his father to return from a trip out of town.

In the meantime, the hopes for a third signee in the person of Amir Williams are apparently still alive, according to Scout's Signing Day Blog:

8:50: Amir Williams plans on announcing his commitment on November 17. He will visit Ohio State officially this weekend, and then think things over. DePaul, Florida, Michigan, Purdue, and Ohio State are all still involved. Information is all over the map, but Florida, Michigan, and Ohio State seem to be the constants with this one.

EDIT: As I mentioned in a reply below, Sam Webb has an article on Williams in the Detroit News today titled "Michigan makes strong bid for Country Day star Amir Williams."  It's certainly worth checking out--seems like Michigan has a decent chance at a recruiting coup here.

Finally, as someone who also follows the women's team, I have to point out that Kevin Borseth secured LOIs from three players yesterday. From the news release:

The University of Michigan women's basketball program has received National Letters of Intent from three student-athletes on Wednesday (Nov. 10), the first day of the early signing period. Aquashia Anderson, a 5-7 guard from Meridian, Miss.; Cyesha Goree, a 6-3 forward from Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Brenae Harris, a 5-10 guard from Marion, Ohio, will join the Wolverines for the 2011-12 season.

This looks like a pretty good class:

  • Goree is a McDonald's High School All-American nominee and was all-state in Class B last year. A Grand Rapids Press article on her can be found here.
  • Anderson is one of the top players in Mississippi and will help fill a void at point guard with the transfer of Dayeesha Hollins. The Meridian Star published a feature on Anderson yesterday.
  • In the news release, Borseth likens Harris to Veronica Hicks, who is entering her senior year. An article on Harris ran yesterday in the Marion Star.

The women's team will actually have at least four newcomers next year, as Kendra Seto transferred to Michigan in September after spending her freshman year at Vermont. She's listed as a 6-1 forward/center and orginally hails from Oshawa, Ontario. Her mgoblue.com profile can be found here.

That Amir has gone from "no chance in hell" to "better than no chance in hell".  So, while not likely, it's not a pipe dream either.

My bro is a state fan (bastard) and he was saying that Amir never showed Izzo the "proper love" (whatever that means) and sparty returned the favor.  Amir wanted to look around and wasn't head over heels in love with state, so state filled the class with kids that were. Happens a lot with top basketball programs.  They have the luxury of a lot of Amirs waiting to commit to their school.

Ok, just wondering. At least it isn't anything about his character or something like that.

Just by looking at that class it seems as if MSU wasn't really looking for big men anyway after getting Payne and Gauna. Pretty risky IMO as Payne could be a 1-or-2-and-done.

I'm glad that Beilein and co. have kept pursuing Williams even if it ends up for naught. It certainly counters the misperception that Beilein doesn't go after top players.

But I'm also glad that Williams will be deciding next week rather than waiting until the late signing period. This way the coaches can focus their full attention on other targets.

Feel sorry for USC Upstate! this weekend.  They are the Spartans, and they wear green & white.

*The "!" behind Upstate is like the "t" in tOSU*

*When you say Upstate! you must bounce a little*

over Florida or Ohio State? If he's a normal, typical HS uber-recruit whose college ambitions consist entirely of maximizing his draft status, I can't imagine why he'd choose UM, which is likely to finish in the bottom half of the conference for the foreseeable future.

Well, Don, how about an answer straight from the horse's mouth:

"(Assistant) Coach (Bacari Alexander) showed me all these post moves at their practice," Williams recalled. "The moves were really advanced and I really liked what they were doing. Coach Alexander has a good track record with (post players). I feel like if I went there he would give me a shot to be in the league one day with the way he develops big men. Coach Alexander answered all of my questions."

Added Williams: "I feel like I could play for Coach Beilein. He and I have a very good relationship. I feel very comfortable with him and the staff. Coach told me what an asset I could be to the team overall. I just had a very good visit at Michigan."

This is from Sam Webb's DetNews article from today on Williams. Sounds like Michigan has more than decent chance to land him.
