Baseball wins 7th straight meeting with MSU

Michigan opened up B1G play today taking on MSU on the road in a weird/annoying 1pm game. I have no idea why this game was scheduled so early. I know they don't have this fancy new thing called lights at both their baseball and softball stadiums so that could be a factor, but why not start at 4pm so people can actually go to the game? I wasn't able to watch most of it but I followed it all game long as I was at work.

MSU is really really bad this year. They were 4-18 entering this game.

Michigan continued their dominance in the rivalry with a 13-hit day at the park.

In the 3rd inning Miles Lewis had an RBI single that scored Ako Thomas and gave Michigan a 1-0 lead. The very next pitch Blake Nelson drove in another run to put the Wolverines up 2-0.

In the next frame, Jordan Nwogu popped a ball up into right field that the MSU outfielder stared at and watched fall to the ground right in front of him. No dive or slide or any attempt to try to catch that ball. The play took long enough to allow Joe Donovan to sprint from 1B all the way home to make it 3-0 Michigan.

In the bottom of the 4th, MSU got a couple of runs on a 2 run single to cut the Michigan lead to 3-2 but that was short lived as Michigan responded in the top of the 5th. MSU continued to have trouble trying to catch fly balls and let another one go to give Jordan Brewer a leadoff double. Miles Lewis brought him home with an RBI double to put Michigan back up by a pair of runs. Blake Nelson then got his 3rd straight double on the day and made it 5-2 Michigan.

In the 8th, Michigan added some insurance as Jack Blomgren blasted a ball over the fence and off the scoreboard to give Michigan a 6-2 lead. Tommy Henry continued what has been a fantastic 2019 season for himself with 8 innings pitched, 3 hits, 4 strikeouts and just 1 walk.

MSU managed to tack on a run in the bottom of the 9th but hilariously created the 3rd out at 3rd base, promptly ending the game.

Michigan beats MSU, 6-3.

That's the 7th straight win in the series by Michigan over MSU. Michigan had 13 hits to MSU's 5 with two of those five coming in the 9th inning with 2 outs.

Michigan is now 18-7 and 1-0 in the B1G.

The series will continue tomorrow at 2pm back at home at Ray Fisher Stadium

*Blake Nelson didn't get 3 straight doubles. Michigan got 3 doubles in a row in the inning.

They play 1:00 PM this time of year because it is cold and they are trying to maximize the warmest part of the day.  It is not easy to play baseball in 38 degree weather.

... weather permitting, anyway: I just looked at the Ann Arbor weather forecast for Saturday.  Not good. High of 41° and 100% chance of rain.

So much for my idea of a day at the ballpark tomorrow.

Saturday's matchup in Ann Arbor is still on for 2:00 pm.

Michigan will start junior Karl Kauffmann (4-2, 2.03) and Michigan State will start junior Mitchell Tyranski (0-4, 4.84).  Kauffmann and Tyranski were classmates at Brother Rice.
