Baseball Beats St. Joseph's 5-1

First game of the California road trip easily went Michigan's way.

Benedetti got things going in the 4th hitting a solo shot off the pitcher Vanderslice. Later Drew Lugbauer would single in two in the 6th. For some insurance Harrison Wenson continued a fine start to the year with a 2-run bomb in the 9th.

The Wolverines were once again fantastic on the mound. Ryan Nutof threw five innings allowing three hits and fanning five. Hendrickson took over and turned in a performance of his own throwing three innings with 1 hit and 6 K's.

The 9th started shaky with a hit batter followed by an infield error and the Hawks' first run, but Lozer finished it off with minimal damage.

Until the 9th inning push from St. Joe's the Hawks were 0-10 hitting with runners on and 0-8 with runners in scoring position. Quite a performace from the pitching staff.

The Wolverines have improved to 5-0 on the year. Up next they're headed to a Saturday meeting with Cal Poly.

16-9 vs Oklahoma

Hitting seems fine, but a bit worried about the pitching come tournament time.  Hope Betsa can get healthy by then.

The UM official site Mgoblue.com, is way behind other schools on lesser sports coverage.  They rely on opposing sites for radio and stats feeds (not working).   Hope the new AD will bring things up to standard.

The starters have yet to give up an earned run, and overall the staff has given up just one earned run in 5 games.

For those who missed it, sophomore Oliver Jaskie was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week based on his performance last weekend against Canisius. Bakich mentioned on his WTKA appearance this week that Jaskie has made a big leap forward from his freshman season. That's also clear from him being listed as the probable starter against #9-ranked Cal on Monday.

Speaking of rankings, in the Baseball America top 25 this week, Michigan moved up 4 spots to #14.

I was thinking of the wrong poll. It was Collegiate Baseball Newspaper that had Michigan moving up from #23 to #19.

One other note: Michigan has seven players on the roster from California, and several more California players either signed for next year or committed for 2017. So taking their Spring Break trip out west (rather than in the south or southeast) makes a lot of sense from a recruiting standpoint.
