Allow Seniors To Play Another Year?

Submitted by ldd10 on March 12th, 2020 at 8:58 PM

Seems like there may be a little of a push to allow seniors another year of eligibility and basically allow schools to have a year of more scholarships than traditionally allotted.

I have mixed feelings.  Great for kids like Teske, Simpson, Stevens, Winston, Powell, etc.  They are, understandably, not allowed to try to fulfill their senior year dreams.  Huge bummer.

On the other hand, is it fair?  Also, the kids got to play 95%+ of their games.

Thoughts?

No way for basketball. No team is guaranteed a spot in the tournament and the regular season was completed. Now if this happened in early December and teams had only played 12-15 games I could see it. I am sure Izzo will whine and cry to try and get Winston another season. NCAA has done stupid stuff before so it just may happen. Now for the spring sports like baseball and softball that is a different story and something that needs to be looked at.

Right now the players being impacted the most by this are those who had hopes of playing professionally. For example, Michigan cancelled it's football Pro Day so guys like Mike Danna don't have an opportunity to influence the scouts. In baseball, is a 15-game sample enough for MLB scouts to make a determination on where/whether to draft a player? There's a lot of money at stake for these guys. I don't know how you make up for these missed opportunities.

But it extends beyond that. My son is a HS senior. His class was supposed to take its senior trip in 2 weeks to Gettysburg then D.C. School's closed for 3 weeks, so that won't happen. One dance and the Spring Concert have already been cancelled. My heart hurts for the fun they'll miss and the memories that they won't have.

My daughter's fiancee was supposed to student teach starting next week then graduate and enter the work force. Student teaching is a requirement in order to graduate. Does this mean he has to come back for an extra semester?

People are getting very sick, a few of them are going to die, the economy tanked to 1987... and you're worried about your son's senior trip and dance? *First world problems, gotta love it...* Trust me it will build character for them...

Secondly, my 2nd degree I was able to transfer my student teaching experience, just ask one of the counselors at UofM. She can always do her student teaching experience at home, or near her new job etc.

I did the above because I couldn't wait to get out of Bmore and the Homewood Campus.

What a horrible idea and I cant even believe some of the elite coaches are even talking about this (for basketball). There is a small argument for spring athletes - based on games missed - but zero percent for basketball players.

I understand the knee-jerk sentiment surrounding it, but ~95% of their entire season was played. Everyone got a full regular season. If this situation had robbed them of their entire season, then I could see the NCAA granting mass waivers to everyone. There is an argument to be made for the spring sports to consider this, though. They got more than half of their seasons wiped out.

Its an incredibly unfortunate situation that affects everyone, but at least for the winter sports, I don't see any kind of waiver happening. Also, you've got to think of the other side of this coin. Who the fuck wants to have to deal with Cassius Winston for another year? I sure don't.

Not everybody gets a trophy, not everybody gets to play... start over with the new kids next year. Sorry seniors...
