900 wins - congrats on being the first to achieve an awesome CFB record

Submitted by ChicagoB1GRed on

As a rival fan my hat's off to Michigan for an incredible accomplishment---wow, that's a lot of Hail Victors!

With all the changes in CFB, programs rise and fall: the Florida St's, Boise St's, and Oregons come and go. Winning NINE HUNDRED says: we've been really good in the past and  present, and will always be really good. An occasional dip here and there, but over the long haul, excellence endures. That's what separates the men from the boys.

The most impressive thing about this milestone besides the wins is that Michigan runs a clean big time program. No Oklahoma or Alabama here.

Been a few posts here and around the web about "900",  thought you guys would whoop it up more on this board, maybe the celebration on the field sufficed (whatever you were celebrating)--after all it's your victory and record so enjoy as you see fit.

This week's game against Nebraska will likely decide the Legends and maybe the B1G title. Cool fact, the  game will also be the first conference game in college football history where both teams have won at least 850 games all-time.

As extra juice for the home crowd, Nebraska will also be commemorating 50 years of sellout crowds at Memorial Stadium, while playing all-timer leader Michigan in your first game ever at Memorial Stadium.

Preseason I figured this game for the divisional showdown, looking forward to a fantastic game. Your team and fans will be treated with respect, win or lose. We'll appreciate your team's history and accomplishments as much as any fan base you'll ever meet.

Picture shows Antelope Field, where Michigan played last time you visited Lincoln in..........1911. This will be your first visit to Memorial Stadium

Thanks for the note, ChicagoB1GRed.  I'm hoping to make it to Lincoln for a game one day, I've heard you have a great gameday atmosphere.

As an aside, wasn't sure what you are referring to with "No Oklahoma...here".  I know they have had a checkered past, I thought they were pretty much on the up and up these days.

yes, lately those schools have stayed out of trouble, but as my post was praising Michigan's accomplishment over the long haul, my point was to contrast your program vs their many past cheating transgressions. Programs winning 800+ games is a short list, those winning them the right way, the list is even shorter.

I wonder if this is going to be a trend now with every hundredth win.

Win #800 (over Wisconsin in 2000) was also a low scoring, nerve wrecking game that wasn't decided until late in the 4th quarter with Drew Henson throwing across his body back to the middle of the end zone to David Terrell.  The whole time the ball was in the air, Brent Musberger was screaming, "Dangerous!  Real dangerous!!!"

So you have that and then a game winning field goal over one of your rivals in the final seconds for win #900.  I can only imagine what the 1,000th win will be like.

Thanks for the post. I have always admired Nebraska and am very excited to have you in the Big Ten. Big Red has always seemed proud, gracious and fanatic - just like a powerhouse program should be.I can't wait to catch a game in Lincoln.

Thanks ChicagoB1GRed...now I have a question for you:

Will your defense be able to slow our offense down enough to win this game?  I'm pretty suren Nebraska is going to score 20+ points on us...your offense is pretty amazing.  But do you think you can keep us from scoring 30?  And if so, why?

This is definitely a toss-up game, but I like how Michigan matches-up against Nebraska.  Seems like our strengths (run defense, run offense) are going to make this a tough game for you.

Admittedly defense hasn't been the team's strength this year. But it's not as bad as it looks. OSU, Wisconsin, and NW got a lot of quick easy points off turnovers.

Some Nebraska stats that worry me the most and have caused us big problems against better competition:

Turnover Ratio: last in the B1G and 110th nationally

Lost Fumbles: last in the B1G and nationally

We won't stop Michigan's offense or have a good chance to win doing that.

Not sure what to think about Michigan's run defense. The stats look good, but only three teams you've played run the ball well, you stopped ND but Air Force and Bama did OK.

to discount the results of the AFA game, or say they didn't matter (people shouldn't, and they do), but the problem in that game had a lot to do with scheme. Mattison wasn't pleased with his own performance that game, and hasn't been a liability against anyone else. Supposedly, the problem was looking at outdated schemes designed to stop the triple-option, and then not adjusting quickly enough. If you're interested, this is what Brian linked to in the AFA UFR:

The biggest surprise in this game was how poorly Michigan defended the option. They spent most of the game in a 3-deep 4-4, with the safety assigned to the pitch man. Sound familiar? No wonder Air Force was able to move the ball. After playing both Navy and Air Force several times in his career, you’d think that Brady Hoke would have known better.

That article in turn links to this one, which breaks down UGA's inability to stop GT doing basically what we tried against AFA.

Taking a look at Brian's UFR grading, he gave Mattison a score of +9 -8 for a score of +1 against Nebraska last year, while he gave Mattison a score of +7 -13 for a score of -6 against AFA this season. Again, not trying to say any of this didn't happen, just that Mattison had an especially bad outing (I don't recall every score Brian graded offhand, but I doubt Mattison has had as bad of a game as he did against Air Force).

Notre Dame in Norman, Oklahoma and Michigan in Lincoln, Nebraska.

How many all-time wins between the four of them?
