4-star Donovan Johnson - Basketball

Reading an article, came across interesting one about Donovan Johnson (brother of Cam who just finished at UNC). He’s a 4-Star, 49th overall in 2020 class. Seems like forward who can shoot. JB and staff were on him, but now Horward is as well.

Here’s the interesting part - Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) ruled him ineligible to play his senior season at Moon Area High School because Johnson repeated eighth grade.

Now, he's not only being recruited by colleges — but also by prep schools such as Spire Academy, Sunrise Christian and Hillcrest Prep, among others. A potential re-classification to the class of 2019 remains on the table, too.

Michigan has two open scholarship remaining for the upcoming season, but hasn't discussed re-classification yet with Johnson. Sounds like Horward is open to discussing this with him after some Peach jam event.

Coukd we still grab this kid for 2019!?! That would be fantastic. We are probably the only top school that could get him locked in for this year. Says UNC is out of spots. Matt D, you got any intel on this one?

My experience leaves me with a very strong  bias  that believes that winning a basketball game, at every level, is predicated upon your guard play. It is kinda like your OL in football-a dominant OL gives you the most control over the game.  I have not seen a ton of film on the prospects but of those I have seen I would put my greatest number of eggs in Nimari Burnett's basket. Because, if you have a kid with that skillset and that IQ out there the entire floor is opened up for his four teammates. He would make a scintillating point but could play the 2 just as well.

Here, a Nimari allows you to stack shooters on the perimeter-and they do not have to have great athleticism and a pronounced ability to create their own shot as they mostly only have to deal with a single defender-this is where a kid like Puff can really flourish. Alternatively, you could pair Nimari up with a kid like Scooby Johnson-who is also a high IQ player but much less athletic. Let Scooby play the point where he would be a size mismatch and slide Nimari to the 2. If you have a Wagner, Nunez and/or Bajema finding holes around the arc...you have yourself an offense that is very difficult to defend...a pick your poison situation for the defense.

Nimari is my #1 recruit watch-all those high-flyers are great but hold secondary value for me.

Whether or not Johnson reclassifies to 2019 and commits to Michigan, are there any other prospects we're looking at to round out the roster for this upcoming year?

Feels like since Franz committed (and even for awhile before that), there hasn't been a whole lot of noise surrounding potential additions.

I know Howard has been involved with a ton of guys for 2020, but I haven't moved on from the 2019 cycle, yet...
