#23 Baseball wins 9th straight over MSU, sweeps series

As many of you have heard, Michigan is in first place in the B1G standings and has a colossal 3 game showdown this weekend at Ray Fisher Stadium vs Indiana.

But today's midweek non-conference featured an in-conference opponent: 13th place MSU

Michigan-MSU is a protected rivalry in the B1G so the teams play a 3 game series each season. So this year's B1G series was East Lansing/Ann Arbor/East Lansing. A neat recent agreement by both coaches is a 4th meeting to ensure both teams get 2 home games in this great rivalry.

#Michigan cruised to an 6-3 at MSU and a 16-2 shellacking of the Spartans at Ray Fisher Stadium. The final game of the series at MSU was postponed and eventually cancelled. It will not be made up.

So today's non-conference game in Ann Arbor was the final meeting of the season between both teams.

Wasn't much different from the other two this year or the previous 8 in the series.

Bottom of the 1st and Michigan's dynamite hitter Jordan Nwogu got on with a leadoff triple. Jesse Franklin then brought home with a sac fly to put Michigan up 1-0.

In the 3rd inning, it was Jesse Franklin adding to his RBI total once again as he smashed a ball over the scoreboard to give Michigan a 2-0 lead.

The score stayed 2-0 for awhile with MSU picking up hits but standing every single baserunner. At one point they were outhitting us.

The play of the game came on defense. Top of the 7th MSU had bases loaded with just 1 out. Angelo Smith got the strikeout for out #2.

A ball hit into shallow RF that could've given MSU the lead was snatched on a diving grab by Jordan Brewer. An SCTop10 play all the way. Amazing. That catch no doubt gave the team momentum as Michigan hammered out 5 more runs after that play.

A bases loaded RBI single by Jimmy Kerr in the bottom of the 7th gave Michigan a 3-0 lead. A passed ball and an RBI groundout by Blake Nelson gave Michigan a 5-0 lead after 7.

Michigan tacked on two more runs in the 8th on an RBI groundout and another sac fly by Jesse Franklin to take a 7-0 lead.

Michigan beats Michigan State 7-0, sweeping the series for the second straight season and winning the series for the third straight season. It's the 9th straight win over the Spartans, the longest win streak in the series since those great Michigan teams of the mid-2000s who absolutely massacred MSU by scores such as 21-9 and 27-6.

Michigan is now 35-11 (14-3 B1G). Another non-conference game tomorrow at Ray Fisher Stadium against county rival Eastern Michigan.

Speaking of crowds, tonight's 6:00 game against Eastern is "dollar day":  $1 tickets and $1 concessions.

I think I posted earlier this week that Friday's game against Indiana (on ESPNU) is at 8:30; it's now listed as an 8:00 game.

Almost all of Michigan's remaining games are on TV, if you can't make it to the ballpark this weekend:

Wed May 8:  vs Eastern Michigan, 6:00 (BTN Plus)
Fri May 10:  vs Indiana, 8:00 (ESPNU)
Sat May 11:  vs Indiana, 2:00 (BTN Plus)
Sun May 12:  vs Indiana, 2:00 (BTN)
Tue May 14:  at Kentucky, 6:30 (SEC Network)
Thu May 16:  at Nebraska, 8:30 (BTN)
Fri May 17:  at Nebraska, 9:00 (BTN)
Sat May 18:  at Nebraska, 3:00 (BTN)

I think they went to the College Cup(final four) in Men’s soccer but I can’t remember for sure. Last year I believe Staee finished at 50 in the final Director’s Cup Standings. They were in the 30’s in the lastest standings which was actually higher than I thought they would be. So no, not really great at much else.

Honestly, no not really. They had a good season in men's soccer this year and that's really the only outlier.

And they're trash in football again. 3-9 and then 7-6 within a 3 year span with holiday bowl ringz being their banner year relegates them to the suck pit.

Their baseball team is usually mediocre to pretty decent at best. They're just terrible this year.

Nothing like their softball program where they've had the same coach since the 90s. They've been to a grand total of 1 NCAA Tournament in her time there (64 team field) and went 0-23 in conference not that long ago. She was even investigated at one point for having an assistant coach intentionally bean a player during batting practice because she didn't like a comment that player allegedly made.

It's good ol boy/girl network over there. Unless they're losing in basketball/football, they don't seem to care and want to keep the terrible coaches around that they have because they're buddies with the AD. Athlete/student welfare be damned.

I'm not even sure they'd fire D'Anton if they had another 3-9 season since he's given them the best years of most of their fan's existences. Past tense but still.

It is a shithole.  They only seem to focus on the revenue sports.  In fact when Title 9 (?) forced them to raise their gender equity quota and make a woman's club team of some sort a varsity sport.  They simply got rid of Men's gymnastics to meet their gender equity "quota".

they need to save money to cover all the nassar liability.

Eh. I just wish the weather was better for baseball regardless of outcomes for me to attend. I've enjoyed my times in A2 and EL for games once my toes thawed.
