2020 recruiting thread
Sorry this isn’t swim lanes but an overview nonetheless. Hoping others can contribute what they know.
How many spots left? Who the heck knows. Officially I think we have 68 scholarship players who could theoretically return. So that would mean only 17 commits. Obviously that won’t happen. We will probably get 2-4 NFL entries and a handful more playing time related transfers. I would guess we take 2-4 more commits with a couple current commits dropping off. Patterson and Mazzcuah have been rumored as maybe not being part of the class. Someone else can confirm or deny.
Offense:
-Need a QB. Looks like we are all in on Stroud who is visiting this weekend. UM-OSU battle.
-TE Theo Johnson announcing Monday. Maybe 40-60 on this one.
-Looks like we want one more OT and we are going after Andrew Gentry, James Pogorelc, and top 100 BC commit Ozzy Trapilo.
Defense:
-Kind of quiet outside of DGW who is visiting with Stroud. Webb thinks we have a very good shot and it’s a position of need. Feel like other than CB at DT is an obvious need but I don’t know any legit names right now.

Nua visited with SDE Van Fillinger the other night and it apparently went well. He decommitted from Texas when they fired their DC last week.

A guy they might bulk up to DT? Looking at the top DTs, there are hardly any uncommitted options. Maybe we flip someone or we just roll with what we have for this cycle and hope to get a couple good ones in 2021. Makes me a little uncomfortable given how our season went.

Freshmen generally stink at DT anyway, so we weren't going to pick up an immediate contributor. Our biggest hope there is that Mazi and/or Hinton develops. I don't think bulking up SDEs to play DT is necessarily a bad approach a lot of the time. One of our issues this year was that we didn't even have that. At one point we had Kemp, who started as a linebacker, and Ben Mason. I thought this was an interesting post the other day from FatGuyTouchdown:
We literally have the son of a 2 time all pro Defensive Tackle committed, miss me with that Vince Wilfork mini me bullshit. Outside the top 5-10 players, defensive tackle is a fluky position to recruit. Most of the guys are already pretty massive, and it's really hard to find 315 pound dudes that move well. It's easier to get SDE's with good frames and put weight on them. Jerry Tillery, Malik McDowell, Jeffrey Simmons and Vita Via were all SDEs in HS. Quinnen Williams was for most of the cycle, he was a generous 265 pounds. Taven Bryan was an OT. Over half of the first rounders at DT over the last few years were another position in high school. Dre'mont Jones, Trysten Hill both ends. Go back to 2016, and almost every big time DT taken was a DE in HS. Chris Jones, Robert Nkemdiche, Sheldon Rankins, Vernon Butler, and Adam Gotsis were ends. Straight up, recruiting SDE's with great frames and moving them in is better. Guys play DT because theyre way too big, or not athletic enough to play DE in high school, so unless you have a massive dude with incredible athleticism (probably going to Alabama or Clemson), DT's are way riskier than SDEs
December 6th, 2019 at 12:26 PM ^
His name is Van so he should be able to get up to at least 6,000 lbs.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:27 PM ^
He's a DT for all intents and purposes. He's already over 250lbs and he plays in a 4i in his HS's 3-4. He's basically already a 3T prospect, he just needs weight.
He's good too. He's probably going to get another ratings bump. Would be pretty lucky to end up with him after not taking his commitment earlier.
December 6th, 2019 at 6:19 PM ^
We really need 5T players to beat OSU, do not want. /s
December 6th, 2019 at 3:04 PM ^
Gonna have to pry him away from Utah I think. But the dude has a mullet, a pierced left ear, and pretty good athleticism for a guy his size. He definitely could bulk up and play DT 2 years from now. I hope UM is pursuing him hard.
December 6th, 2019 at 3:41 PM ^
He grew up a Michigan fan and wanted to come to AA-it was Michigan who would not take him not the other way around.
December 6th, 2019 at 3:31 PM ^
would expect him to end up at Utah.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:16 PM ^
Need DTs and CBs, ready to play next year. We should add the portal guys and JUCCO candidates to the recruiting posts as well. Not sure which of the services follows the transfers, but we need experience beef at NT and cover speed at CB / NB.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:16 PM ^
A Stanford DT who started in 12 games entered the portal a couple days ago.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:22 PM ^
A Florida State DT just entered the portal as well. Didn’t play much this year, though.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:29 PM ^
And another. Two starting Stanford DL in the portal: Michael Thompson and Jovan Swann
December 6th, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
Seems like Stanford is catching up to Shaw and the shine is wearing off. (Has worn off?) This feels like it's just happened in the last year, or so. WTH is going on out there?
December 6th, 2019 at 12:56 PM ^
They had a CB enter the portal today too. A bunch of these have been graduates - probably kids who have a Stanford degree and would now like to go be on a team that wins.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^
Yeah, but going from Stanford to OSU is a huge step down academically.
December 6th, 2019 at 4:32 PM ^
But you still have your Stanford undergrad degree.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:56 PM ^
Williams.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:04 PM ^
Sorry, yes. Michael Thompson was the Oklahoma DT who just entered the portal. One too many DTs named Michael.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:07 PM ^
Edit
No Michael Thompson listed on Stanford roster ... should that be Michael Williams ?
December 6th, 2019 at 12:29 PM ^
We should be all over the guy from Stanford, being that we're their #1 backup school. We offered him way back when but I don't think we went after him hard. Don't think he ever visited.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Speaking of Stanford, any chance of flipping Myles Hinton?
December 6th, 2019 at 1:18 PM ^
Why do some of you people think these guys who can't cut it at Stanford and Texas are suddenly going to be studs at Michigan?
Danna played well, but he took a step up in competition and still wasn't some sort of difference maker. That's probably best-case scenario outside of QBs. And we have plenty of those.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:22 PM ^
Because they're not transferring because they can't cut it. Williams has started 25 games for Stanford, including every game this season. Swann had 7.5 TFLs and 4 sacks this year.
December 6th, 2019 at 2:12 PM ^
Because a DT shaped person with D1 offers is a better prospect than Jordan fuckin Glasgow over center.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:17 PM ^
If we don’t sign a couple more defensive tackles and corners, I’ll rage so hard!
December 6th, 2019 at 12:18 PM ^
Ignore this comment
Here's a picture of henri the otter
December 6th, 2019 at 12:25 PM ^
I have no idea what you're talking about with Hinton. He's never been discussed as an OT, where we have a ton of depth. He even played as a DT against OSU, 6 days ago.
I have this hope that the coaches are really high on some guys we haven't talked much about. Kris Jenkins dad was a monster NT in the NFL, and we've done well with legacy recruits. Supposedly they LOVE Welschof but he was always a year 3 guy.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:30 PM ^
Maybe he's mixing up him and his little brother???
December 6th, 2019 at 12:33 PM ^
Maybe? I can't imagine how you'd make that mistake, but what do I know.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:41 PM ^
But like, have you watched any games this year? He's always only been discussed as a DT and has solely played there this year.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:49 PM ^
Kemp and Dwumfour should both be returning. We get everyone back on the DLine except for Danna.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:34 PM ^
Jenkins Sr was 360. Not sure what size he was a HS sr but that may be relevant when projecting Jr.
December 6th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
Shit, has it only been 6 days??
December 6th, 2019 at 12:26 PM ^
Hinton played at DT in the OSU game. Where is the "switched to OT" coming from?
December 6th, 2019 at 12:35 PM ^
So you chose to go off that rather than actually seeing him play DT all year?
December 6th, 2019 at 12:38 PM ^
I guess I was just never conscious of him on the field. My mistake. But I don't think it changes my argument. That position is drastically thin next year.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:54 PM ^
One or both of Kemp/Dwumfour might receive a 5th year. Jeter will be a senior. Paea may have finally settled into a position and is 300+ lbs. Hutchinson and Welsholf could bulk up ~10 lbs and be DT sized. Hinton and Mazi Smith are probably your starters.
I don't think we are "drastically thin" next year.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
Even if it isn't the strongest, it won't be the glaring weakness it was this year. At the absolute worst, we'll be slightly better on the interior.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
Geez. The guy just got it wrong, and provided evidence as to why he did. I watched every down of the season and it was not particularly hard to miss Hinton's contributions. Think we can move on now.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:30 PM ^
Hinton WAS a DT recruit but everything seems to indicate he was switched to OT by the staff this year.
What? Hinton played DT against OSU last weekend... His brother is a OT commit to Stanford in the 2020 class.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:36 PM ^
I think the biggest problem is that there aren't very many athletic 6'4" 300 lb 17 year olds walking around this planet.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:41 PM ^
That's true. But it still seems like we'd be able to get at least one of the 50 or so who are in every recruiting class.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
My prom date Helga is the exception.
December 6th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Can you send a pic of her in a bikini?
December 6th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
My prom date Helga is the exception. She was wicked in the cone drills.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:54 PM ^
Hinton was playing at DT in the OSU game
edit: he got it didn’t mean to pile on
