2012 TE Recruit, Sean Price?

Submitted by 912Jeff on

I know we need to focus on the current class since it's so close to signing day but I saw Price's highlights and was amazed. Does anyone with advanced recruiting knowledge have any idea if we have a legitimate shot at him? I know he is from Citra, FL so I would imagine he'd be a tough pull from the Florida schools. This kid is gonna be a stud.

There are a lot of factors.  As to this particular recruit, who knows.  As to any 4* or even 5*, here is how I see it:

1.  Defense

We will improve next year.  It is impossible not to.  So, the national discussion about M defense will almost certainly be "they hired a D-minded head coach, brought in an uber-successful pro-DC and BAM, their defense is on the upswing."  Easy to be going up when you are around 110.  But, given all of the returning talent, T-Wolf, etc., I expect quick improvement.

So, on defense, we should be able to get an audiance with just about every kid who does not have a strong prediliction towards a particular school or against Michigan, cold weather or the B10.  Obviously, if our W/L record is strong, this will only help our chances.

2.  Offense

Right now, there is some excitement, some curiosity and a ton of uncertainty surrounding our program, in general.  If we come out next year and have a ho-hum 7-5 (or worse) regular season, we will have a tough go on offensive recruiting, as recruits will see an offense that is perceived to have taken a step back (I am offering no opinion on this, as there is a ton of debate as to how good our offense really was last year).  So, under this situation, we might struggle in recruiting.

If we come out and go 8-4, beating some actual decent teams, while putting up enough points to be in the top 40 offenses, we should be able to recruit well enough to do really well in-state and in the mid-west (where this staff is clearly focussed), but may not be able to reach into Florida and steal a stud like this kid.

If we go 9-3 or any better (dare to dream), beating at least 1 of MSU, OSU, NEB, and do so with an offense that is considered to be somewhat "dynamic," then I would imagine that we would be able to get into the living rooms of just about any stud recruit, all things being equal.  Perhaps not a recruit who is intent in playing in a certain type of offense (hence the "all things being equal"), but certainly a stud TE.

I know that this doesn't answer your direct question about this recruit, but just my thoughts in general as to how they might impact kids like this kid.

That he grew up a huge Seminoles fan, but that's not inside info, haha. They say it's going to be very difficult to pry him from FSU. Even if, by some long shot, he passes up FSU, The Gators have switched to a pro style offense, so that hampers our chances considerably.

FSU just landed a top TE in Nick O'Leary so that might push him away from being a semi...Dare I say, Frost was huge Mich fan and went another direction. But there was other issues with his decision (see CC)...It's def too early to tell, but I think well have a very strong recruiting class next year. Def Top 10 in nation

"if denard goes heisman contender again that will open doors once more though"

Why? Because he went to Michigan and did well? That's not how it works. Relationships are built between coaching staffs and HS coaches, with people in the area. That coach's name becomes respected and the school gets put in higher esteem. Getting a Heisman candidate from that area does not impact how much the current staff is familiar with the area

There are two 2012 tight ends that Scout has ranked higher than Price that are from Cali. One of them is from San Diego. Hoke would have a much better shot with them.

He's got two very good teammates by the name of Latroy Pittman (committed to UF) and Jamie Gilmore (uncommitted). He had a top 3 of UF, Bama, and ND earlier in the process, but that might have changed. Bottom line: We don't have much of a shot unless things change
