#18 M Lacrosse vs. Ohio State Part Deux: BTT Edition, Home Today at 3:30

Michigan men's lacrosse hosts archrival Ohio State for the second week in a row, this time as part of the Big Ten tournament. The game will be at the State Street Facility at 3:30 this afternoon and will air live on the Big Ten Network. Michigan is fighting for its first ever NCAA tournament berth and at the moment is outside the bubble.  Michigan and Ohio State are in the exact same boat: they both need a win to stay alive and then a win next week vs. #5 Penn State would almost certainly get them in.  Michigan has sold out the last two games so hopefully the weather is decent out there and they get a great crowd again today.

Michigan played one of its best games of the year last week when they used a massive mid-game run, including 10 goals in the 3rd quarter, to beat the Buckeyes 19-14. It was a total team effort and Michigan got strong performances in all phases of the game. Specifically, the faceoffs were OUTSTANDING and replicating that again today would be a major key to victory. Attackman Michael Boehm also had a phenomenal game. After going scoreless on 0-8 shooting the previous week vs. Penn State, Boehm stayed at the field until 10:30 working on his shooting. And it paid off: He was on fire against Ohio State and finished with a poetic 8 goals.

Ohio State will likely change up their approach to find a way to win possessions from faceoffs but that should still be a major advantage in Michigan's favor. Michigan's offense has to make those F/O wins count by avoiding turnovers and finishing good scoring opportunities. Goalie Shane Carr is playing well and if the defense can crack down on unassisted goals and stay out of the penalty box they should be able to control this game.

Let's also root for Duke and ND to take care of Syracuse and UNC to hopefully move them out of the way and make their resumes look weaker. A Harvard win over Yale and losses by Penn, Rutgers and Princeton would also be extremely helpful for Michigan.

GO BLUE!!! BEAT THOSE BUCKEYES!!!

So, according to Michigan's twitter page (and once again I apologize for mistakenly thinking this was going to be on BTN), Michigan is up 6-3 after the first quarter with 6 goals from 6 different players. That sounds good to me, hope they can keep it rolling...

Seemed pretty comfortable the whole way, good W. Nice to end Ohio State's season on consecutive weeks too!

The Penn State matchup is interesting to me.  I haven't been particularly impressed with them and I thought Michigan really outplayed them for 3 quarters. If Rowlett and Wietfledt can dominate faceoffs and they can get some production from the offense, they can absolutely spring the upset. GO BLUE!!

(Damn BTN to hell, I really wanted to watch this game. It was raining here and I couldn't get any baseball games and NBA/NHL aren't on until later so I ended up having to watch...the NFL Draft. Have mercy on my soul..)

Seems that way without actually watching/seeing it, stats tell that story. Twice in a row, woohoo!!

Hopefully they can get into the NCAAs and put some more inertia behind the program toward becoming a more consistent power in the league and nationally. I truly believe they can be an elite program at some point.

So far:

  • Facilities? Check
  • Coach? Check (TBD over the next few seasons?)
  • Recruiting? Mostly Check - still think we need to be slightly better for # of top end players and deeper overall, but certainly trending well....current successes will help that I think
  • Fan support? Check

It sometimes feels like their mindset is what holds them back, but a few great years can really change that.

As for BTN....Right? Pick one game to put on the effing + network, just to be sure nobody sees it 🙄

Watched the last PSU game and if M plays a similar game through all four quarters and the PSU goalie doesn't stand on his head with 17 saves, they can definitely win it.
