This is Michigan's lead over Penn State in overall attendance for the 2008 season. Penn State's largest home crowd attendance has been 110,017 for the Michigan game, so it's possible that Penn State might nudge past Michigan, but otherwise, Michigan, despite the smaller stadium capacity this season, will hold on to the attendance title for another year. So we can perhaps at least win something this season.
By the way, the Northwestern game was only the third smallest crowd of the season, Toledo and Miami both drew smaller crowds, Michigan State was the largest crowd of 110,146.

Something makes me think that the ticket counters at Beaver Stadium will find a way to squeeze 111,708 in there somehow.

Actually, the athletic department fudges the numbers. Always has. They apparently can't tally attendance at the turnstiles, so their calculations comprise the following:
TICKETS SOLD + OTHERS (players, media, bands, vendors, ushers)
So, the Toledo and Miami games had the lowest attendance, because those were the ones where the Athletic Department couldn't sell off the remaining single-game tickets. The Northwestern game was technically sold out, except that there were about 15 Northwestern fans in the whole visiting section, and methinks the Athletic Department couldn't manage to convince fans to buy tickets at the last minute to see 3-7 Michigan play Northwestern.
There were not 106,000 people at the Northwestern game. Hell, I doubt there were 100,000. Maybe not even 95,000. But the Athletic Department counted every ticket sold and unused into the "attendance."

Of course - it's been years since any sports team (pro or collegiate) actually counted the turnstile turns to record attendance. They all use the paid attendance (and, in college football, sometimes add gameday visitors). That's not fudging the numbers; it's the standard practice.

Penn State drew 109,845 to today's game at Beaver Stadium. That was the second largest crowd of the year in Happy Valley, but, it also means by 1,862 fans, Michigan will remain the NCAA Division I FBS per game Attendance champion for the 2008 season.
Go Blue!
